Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment have won the leases for Casino Niagara and Casino Fallsview. As posted in August, the (OLG) Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation were selling the leases.  Both Casino Niagara and Casino Fallsview are run by the OLG. OLG President and CEO Stephen Rigby said:

It will make future capital costs of developing, expanding, improving and maintaining the Niagara casinos the responsibility of a service provider – so public money is no longer used to cover these costs.

Mohegan Gaming will begin to pick up these costs from Summer 2019.  Mohegan will also be in charge of running both casinos. During the sale process, MGE beat four other casino groups. Out of the four other groups, two were Canadian. These were Great Canadian Gaming Company and Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Ltd. Sadly, both Canadian companies dropped out early on. This left three American groups: Hard Rock Cafe International Inc, Caesars Entertainment Corp and Mohegan.

Who is Mohegan Gaming?

Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment are a Native American casino group. They are based in the State of Connecticut. Mohegan Gaming is the business arm of the Mohegan Tribe. Founded in 1996, Mohegan Gaming has over 20 years in casinos. Some of the other Mohegan tribal businesses are hotels, bars & restaurants. Casinos make up the largest part of their group.

Why does Mohegan Gaming want Casino Niagara and Casino Fallsview?

Like many other casino groups, Mohegan gaming is looking to expand. Mohegan Gaming already owns a number of US casinos. These are based in Connecticut, Pensylvania, and Washington. Now, Mohegan Gaming is set on overseas growth. In early 2018, Mohegan said they were taking part in a $5 billion dollar South Korean project. Based near Incheon Airport, Mohegan Gaming will build a mega-casino hotel. This will house 1350 hotel rooms and a 20,000 square foot casino. The casino will have 1,500 slot machines and 250 table games. However, this project will take years to finish. In the meantime, Mohegan can focus on Canada.

Built in Ontario, Casino Niagara and Casino Fallsview are hugely popular. This is due to their closeness to Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Canada. Each year over 30 million people come to the area. Meaning there is a chance for Mohegan Gaming to make a lot of money.

Head of  Mohegan Kevin Brown “Red Eagle” said:

We are honoured to be selected as the service provider by the OLG in what was a very competitive process. This procurement marks Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment's advancement as a leader in commercial gaming and intergrated resort experiences around the world, while promoting greater economic developement and tourism in the Niagara region through our outstanding gaming, entertainment, and resort offerings.

What does the future look like for Casino Niagara and Casino Canada Land Casinos - Horseshoe fallsFallsview?

Opened in 1996, Casino Niagra was built on the former Maple Leaf Village. Casino Niagara was the first casino built in Niagara.  The entire casino floor covers 95,000 sq ft. Inside, the casino houses 1,500 slot machines, 40 tables games, and 4 restaurants. In 2017, Casino Niagara underwent a redesign. Meaning, that Casino Niagara was in great shape to have its lease sold. Mohegan will no doubt be planning future upgrades and new services.

Compared to Casino Niagara, Fallsview Casino is quite young. First opened in 2004, it cost $1 billion dollars to build the Fallsview Casino Resort. Fallsview Casino hotel has 374 rooms with a view of the Horseshoe Falls. Fallsview Casino floor is a large 200,000 sq ft. space. In the casino, there are over 3,000 slots and 100 table games. No major works have been carried out at Fallsview since then. Meaning that unlike Casino Niagara, Fallsview will need more work.

Mohegan Gaming will own both leases for the next 20 years. In that time Mohegan will no doubt put their own stamp on both casinos. The City of Niagara, the OLG, and will be watching to see what happens.
