A Dark Matter is comes from a team effort between Microgaming and Slingshot Studios. And the designers must have put their heads together for some time before they came up with this one because the slot is furnished with an elaborate backstory — but I’ll tell you more about that below. Oddly, the grid is made up of 5 reels and just 5 paylines, which isn’t a common layout. The features are fairly restrained, much as the Victorians were, but I don’t think that was intentional. Read on to find out how you can get as close as possible to solving the mystery and the 2,400 x your bet maximum prize.

  • The theme and background story has been extensively developed
  • A generous maximum prize of 2,400 x your bet is up for grabs
  • The slot symbols carry higher than average values
  • A Dark Matter is available to players in Canada
  • The slot is limited to 5 paylines
  • Gameplay is very light on special features
  • Despite the detailed backstory, the slot lacks a plot climax

A Dark Matter - Theme and Background

The slot is hosted by 4 main characters, all of whom carry either frightened or menacing expressions. Someone is definitely up to no good, I just can’t figure out who — and that’s the whole point. The Victorian, uncanny whodunit vibe is strong with this one, and it could have been an awesome theme. It could have.

Slingshot Studios went to far as to create an extensive backstory for this slot. The really short version is that Wraith Manor (the scene of our slot), run by Lady Eleanor Wraith, is besieged by troubles, resulting in many disappearances in the town of Stonehurst. Nathan Highmore has been called in to investigate and get to the bottom of the trouble. Sounds like an awesome movie plot right? However, while the individual characters are well crafted, the rest of the slot is nothing to write home about.

The remaining symbols are pretty standard and don’t add much to the general theme. The backdrop is a Victorian cobbled street, lit by ornate lamp posts and lined with bare boughed trees. It’s all very eerie, encouraged by the fact that it’s set in the dark of night. The soundtrack is one the best I’ve encountered, adding tension to the theme with high, quivering notes and dramatic twangs.

A Dark Matter - Gameplay

It seems like the game designers pitched all their efforts into developing the story behind the slot, but they should have probably spent a little more time developing the gameplay. I say this because A Dark Matter is undeniably light on the features. Despite this, there are a couple things you should know about how the slot works.

A Dark Matter - Wild

There are 3 different Wilds to wrap your head around. The basic version works like all Wilds do, substituting for all symbols except Scatters. Next up is the Stacked Wild, which only lands on reels 2 and 4 during the base game. Last up is the Invading Wild, which is an exclusive Microgaming trademark. This is a fully Stacked Wild appearing on reels 2 and 4 that can duplicate itself onto an adjacent reels and turn them Wild too.

A Dark Matter - Free Spin

Free Spins

This feature is where you have your best chances at striking gold. Once triggered it incorporates all 3 of the Wilds discussed above, boosting potential wins dramatically. To activate the free spins round you’ll need to land 3 Scatter symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4. Do this and you’ll get started with 12 free spins. Each time you land a Scatter during the feature you’ll receive an extra spin, meaning there’s no limit to how many spins you end up receiving.

A Dark Matter - Payouts and Wagering Limits

A Dark Matter comes with just 5 paylines, so off the bat my first thought was that it’s going to be pretty hard to make significant wins. On the plus side, winning combinations can be formed both ways, which does essentially double the paylines. The symbols carry much higher values than you find with most slots, so wins in the base game are quite pleasing. Even the low value card suit symbols rake in anything from 0.6x to 14x the stake. There are 5 high value symbols, these being the slots characters and storyline heroes; Silas Brewer, Molly Perkins, Bertram Lynch, Eleanor Wraith, and Nathan Highmore.

But it’s Nathan who really brings home the bacon because if you land 5 of a kind youll bag a massive 600 x your bet. But the reality is that you’re more likely to land 3 or 4 of a kind, in which case the return is drastically reduced. Four of a kind of these will pay 7 x, 8 x, 12 x, 16 x, and 20 x respectively. Overall, the slot offers a lot to shoot for. It’s capable of a maximum 1,200 x your stake during the base game, and 2,400 x your stake during the free spins feature thanks to multipliers which can get tacked on to your wins. Putting those figures into monetary terms, players are in the running for a C$60,000 pay day in the base game, or up to a whopping C$120,000 on a single during the free spins feature.

Final Verdict

A Dark Matter

Whether you enjoy the slot or not, you have to appreciate the effort that went into creating A Dark Matter’s slot backstory. Features aside, the storyline is so detail oriented that I almost wish it was a book or a movie I could learn more about. Unfortunately I found the actual gameplay lacking, which was a shame as this slot has been a long awaited release from Microgaming.

Despite the grand detail, I felt a little bored with the slot, largely due to the fact that the only real special feature isn’t triggered frequently and not much else happens in between. I would recommend anyone who appreciates a good theme to give this slot a go, but it’s a bit of a one hit wonder in all other aspects.
