As has become increasingly common with Microgaming releases, Anderthals is born of a collaboration between the game giant and the much smaller studio, Just For The Win. Using Microgaming’s platform, the studio has produced a lovable caveman couple who walk with dinosaurs and consume hunks of meat on the bone. If The Flintstones come to mind, you’re not far off track. The slot has 5 reels and 40 paylines, and despite the cheerful cartoon characters the game conceals some mighty high volatility. Read on to see what happened when we turned the evolution clock back a few centuries.

Anderthals - Theme and Background
Anderthals follows a caveman theme. While this is definitely less common in the slot world, the Anderthal duo have a distinctly Flintstone influence. Just For The Win has re-created their own version of the legendary cartoon, and did a great job of injecting charisma into a handful of symbols.
There’s a lot to keep your eye on in the game. The highly detailed symbols are extremely fun to look at, as is the ticking feature bar at the top of the grid (we get into this in the section below). A roaring dinosaur stands in as the Wild, while a flaming torch is the Scatter. The accompanying music is made up of beating drums and other crude instruments, paired with the deep humming voices from those I can only assume are our prehistoric ancestors. Even the card suit symbols have been given a super fun makeover, hewn from roughly cut and colored stone.
The Anderthals also make an appearance, with Mrs Anderthal being considerably more attractive than her rather dim looking husband. The entire theme comes together extremely well and is brilliant fun!
Anderthals Slot Gameplay
While the game is definitely highly exciting and animated, it also means the gameplay is a little confusing. It took me some time to figure out what the heck was going on. I’ve save you the trouble by outlining everything below.
Feature Spots
This is the most confusing part of the game, and it took a fair few spins before I grasped the concept. Above the reels you’ll see 5 different food items that might have been consumed in the prehistoric era (meat on the bone, broccoli and so forth). Each item displays a bonus feature connected to the reel below. The items spin in tandem with the reels, so the Feature Spots will vary on each spin.
But the only way these Feature Spots are useful at all is if you can land 2 Feature Symbols (this is the flaming torch symbol) on the reels. This will trigger the Feature Spots directly above the Feature Symbols. This is the only way to trigger the 5 different bonus features (and even the Free Spins feature but we get into this in the next part). The five features are as follows:
- 1 x Bet or 2 x Bet gives you a multiplier of 1 x or 2 x
- Expanding Wilds gives you an expanding wild that covers the reel from top to bottom
- Extra Wilds give you extra wilds on the reel directly below the feature spot
- Wild x2 or Wild x3 will transform wild symbols into 2x or 3x wild multipliers
- Respins will obviously award 1 respin, the respin will also include expanding wilds, 2 x multipliers and 3 x wild multipliers.
Free Spins
The bonus game can only be activated through the Feature Spots (see above). The symbol representing free spins is the meat on the bone. Once triggered, the bonus round will always grant you 8 free spins.
That’s not very many, but you do get the opportunity to trigger extra spins during the free games. This is done by landing the extra spin feature spots which award 2 more spins apiece. Any other kind of feature spot that was already active, will remain active for the duration of the free spins bonus round. The game will end when you run out of spins.
Anderthals - Payouts and Wagering Limits
The hit frequency is calculated about about 1 in every 5 spins. That’s not too bad for a high volatility slot, but it’s high enough to price out a lot of players. The only benefit is that spins can be played as low as C$0.10, so small budget players can give this slot a fair try. Be sure to adjust the bet before you get started though because the game is set to C$0.50 per bet at default.
The T-Rex wild together with the game logo are the two highest paying symbols here, and somewhat close behind is the two main characters, Annie and Andy Anderthal. The lower value royals are made of stone, and you need between 3 and 5 matching symbols on a payline to win. Here we present you with the paytable for Anderthals slot:
- The T-Rex wild pays 32 x for 5 on a payline
- The Game logo pays 32 x for 5 on a payline
- Mrs Annie Anderthal pays 20 x for 5 on a payline
- Mr Andy Anderthal pays 16 x for 5 on a payline
- The card suits all pay 8x for 5 on a payline
Should You Play Anderthals Slot?

Final Verdict
Anderthals
This game is incredibly enjoyable to play. That singular fact is both its strength and its weakness. Obviously it’s wonderful to be entertained by a game you’re paying to play, but it’s less wonderful to be so distracted by the theme you miss the fact that the wins are rather weak.
I would definitely recommend players try out this game because it really is so much fun — but if those feature symbols fail to land after a few initial spins, you could be looking at a bit of a loser. You might be better off streaming old episodes of The Flintstones instead.
