Microgaming teamed up with Triple Edge Studios to create a space adventure with a difference. This slot will take you on a wild journey through the galaxy, escorted by Billy and Jesse – two gun wielding space cadets who never got over the 80s.

Dripping in fluorescent lighting and accompanied by a pulsing beat emitting from super sized boombox speakers, this 5 reel slot offers up to 5,000 times your stake per spin. But is this one wild adventure you should get on board with, or would it be more prudent to leave the 80s back where they belong? I hitched a ride with Billy and Jesse to find out.

Attack on Retro - Theme and Background

It’s pretty funny that despite the 80s being over three decades ago, the era is still associated with futuristic themes. But this is actually a really popular smash up, one you’ll find very much alive across comic books and games the world over. It’s even got its own name, the self-explanatory ‘retrofuturism’.

Attack on Retro embraces the 80s in all its neon, boom box, wacky hairdos glory, and teams it up with a space adventure to geek out over. It’s all robots and laser guns, set in a galaxy far, far away, and spinning to the beat of some catchy retro tunes. The entire experience is hosted by two flashy characters that go by the names of Jesse and Billy.

Together they preside over their metallic empire, warding off the threat of imminent attack. The background seems to be the city where our space warriors live, while the rest of the design is inspired by the inside of a spacecraft that’s dominated by stainless steel. Billy and Jesse are on the reels, acting as the slot’s two Wild symbols. There’s also a Free Spins logo, robotic hands, hover boards, neon boom boxes, and electric keyboards. Bringing up the low value rear are a set of neon designed Royals.

Attack on Retro - Gameplay

With three separate features to sink your teeth into, you’re unlikely to get bored with Attack on Retro. Despite the constant activity, it shouldn’t be too hard to keep track of what’s going on.

Attack on Retro hyperspins

It’s in this feature that players can actually have an impact on the game’s RTP, raising it to the maximum possible. This works by allowing players to respin a non-winning reel after any spin. But this comes at a cost. The actual price per spin is determined on a case by case basis by the slot’s algorithm.

Players are free to respin as many times as they like, but this can be a quick way to an empty account balance. Before being lured into the temptation of a Hyperspin, take a look at the grid and try to work out the odds of landing the symbol you need with a single reel respin. If it’s unlikely to bring you closer to triggering the bonus game, it’s probably best to steer clear.

Attack on Retro Random WIlds

Random Wilds

This is a random feature that can be triggered during any base game spin. When it’s activated, a few drones will begin hovering across the grid. Lasers will appear out of nowhere and open fire on the drones, transforming them into Wild symbols. By the end of the feature you could find yourself with up to 15 Wilds, which would make for a very healthy pay out.

Attack on Retro Free Spins

Free Spins

The exciting bonus comes with a player choice, which always increases the appeal in my opinion. You’ll need to land 3 scatter symbols on the 3 middle reels in order to kick things off. This isn’t as hard as you might think. Once activated the grid will transform to offer the player the option of three different Free Spins games, like so:

  • Low volatility offering 10 Free Spins on a 1 x multiplier
  • Medium volatility offering 5 Free Spins on a 2 x multiplier
  • High volatility offering just 2 Free Spins on a 5 x multiplier

So which to choose? Considering that each game will always come with two fully stacked sticky wilds on reels 1 and 5, there’s value to be had in any game. Players can also win the chance to collect 5 or 10 extra spins by landing 2 or 3 Scatters respectively. To give yourself a chance at these I would suggest the Low or Medium options, as these allow you more spins for the opportunity to extend the feature.

Attack on Retro - Payouts and Wagering Limits

Players who like to get into the nitty gritty of a slot’s math model will be interested to know that not only does Attack on Retro have a lower than average RTP, but that it’s also unstable. In the base game it sits at 95.58 %, but if you choose to engage the Hyperspins feature, you can raise the RTP to 96.08 %. This isn’t necessarily an easy decision, because each Hyperspin will come with a uniquely calculated cost based on probability.

Symbol values are a touch disappointing. Billy and Jesse are the highest-paying symbols, but their payouts only reach as high as 100 x for a winning combination with both characters. After this, the next highest value symbol is the hover board. Here’s what each can pay out individually:

  • Billy wild symbol pays 100 x for 5 on a payline
  • Jesse wild symbol pays 100 x for 5 on a payline
  • Hover board pays 20 x for 5 on a payline
  • Keyboard pays 12 x for 5 on a payline
  • Ghetto blaster pays 8 x for 5 on a payline
  • Robotic hand pays 6 x for 5 on a payline
  • Royal symbols pay between 3 x and 2 x for 5 on a payline

Final Verdict

Attack On Retro

The slot is definitely well designed. It looks better than the majority of Microgaming releases, and we would guess this has a lot to do with the efforts of Triple Edge Studios. The gameplay is exciting, and it’s all set to a soundtrack which was actually fun to listen to. The only real downers are the unstable RTP, which means that unless you engage the Hyperbet feature, you won’t be getting the best odds the slot has the offer. The fact that wagers only go up to C$20 per spin will also limit the win potential for those players who like to place large bets. All in all over, this is one retro trip to the future that I’m willing the take — despite the paradoxical premise.
