Just when you thought the Twilight mania was officially (and thankfully) over, Vampires resurface once again. ELK Studio has set pale-skinned night walkers loose across a limited 5×3 grid, which still manages to carry a rather impressive 99 active paylines. That means that despite the high volatility, you’ll be seeing relatively frequent (if not particularly large) wins hit your balance. But small base game wins aren’t how you’ll hit the maximum prize of 2,500 x. That comes down to the game’s special features, a series of Golden Wilds, Scatters, Free Spins, Boosted Respins and Boosted Stacks.

Blood Lust - Theme and Background
ELK Studios have chosen to go down the teen heartthrob route, with the characters of Blood Lust having a definite lean toward the Cullens of the literary and cinematic world. It’s all pale skin, suave hair and withering stares. The only departure is the backdrop, as these vampires reside in a relic of Old Transylvania, with trees stripped of leaves and a gothic castle dominating the vista. Naturally, the time of day is dusk, allowing our male and female vamps to begin their day of whatever vampires do all day.
The symbols on the reels are designed around beautifully crafted Heart, Diamond, Spade, and Club icons, an elaborate gold Wild, and something that looks suspiciously like a heart in a jar. The four vampire characters also hold their own on the reels, easily distinguished by the color of their hair. The most valuable is the golden haired male vampire, he’s followed by the female redhead, next up is a dreamy-looking blue-haired lady vamp, and pulling up the rear is an androgynous blood sucker with green locks, bearing an uncanny resemblance to Billie Eilish.
Blood Lust - Gameplay
There isn’t much animation in Blood Lust but there’s certainly a decent amount of gameplay action. Here’s what the bloodsuckers bring to the table.
Just as you would expect from a Wild, these symbols match with regular symbols to form winning combinations. But aside from this purpose, the Golden Wild also serves to form combinations by itself, paying up to 40 times the bet for a full payline.
This can only be activated on reel 5 and you’ll need to wait for the rare ‘candle in a glass jar’ symbols to land. If this happens then one symbol type is chosen at random and held in place while the other positions are re-spun. Any bonus symbols are also held in place to increase the chance of triggering the bonus game or a larger win.
Each reel holds stacks of identical symbols. At the start of each spin symbols are randomly chosen to fill these stacks. This does help to make big winnings combos, but since different reels can have different symbols on their boosted stacks, this feature won’t necessarily always pay out.
If 3 scatter symbols land in view they’ll trigger the Free Spins bonus game. Depending on where they land on the reels, a rectangular zone will form, and each tile in this zone adds 1 free spin apiece. That means that your starting spins can range from 4 at the lowest to 15 at the most. During free spins, the three lowest premium symbols appear above the reels, each with their own meter.
When these symbols their associated meter is filled. Once a meter is full it will add an extra spin to the game and transform into the highest paying blond vampire for the remainder of the spins. This feature is where you can walk away with the game’s largest prizes since it can be re-triggered several times over.
Blood Lust - Payouts and Wagering Limits
The only player input required is the decision as to what bet to set for each spin, and whether you want to set the reels to autoplay, or man every click yourself. You can choose to play from as little as $0.20 per spin, up to a healthy $100. Since the volatility level scores an eight out of ten on the ELK Studio ranking, you should be prepared for high volatility gameplay. At most, the game will pay 2,500 times the bet, which means that you could walk away with C$250,000 in your pocket if you’re brave enough and lucky enough. Still, I would have expected a higher max bet for such dicey gameplay. The symbols themselves aren’t particularly valuable. The higher payer is the golden-haired vampire, who offers 40 times the stake for five of a kind. The hit frequency is 23.5%, which is a little low, as is the 96% RTP. Although this percentage is bang on average, a lot of the new releases are offering RTPs higher than this.
Blood Lust - Final Verdict
Blood Lust cuts things right through the middle on the positives and negatives scale. I liked the theme (despite the cliches) and I enjoyed the thematic elements and music. The gameplay, while not original, was fast-paced and entertaining. On the other end of the scale, Blood Lust falls short on payout potential. With wins capped at 2,500 times the stake it’s hard to imagine really hardcore slot players getting excited about playing the slot. ELK Studios largely cater toward more recreational players, and this romanticized vampire fest is probably more likely to appeal to the female half of that group.
