Brazil Bomba - Theme and Background

The theme is naturally carnival in Rio de Janeiro, where spirits are high and clothing is minimal. One such carnival mascot stands to the left of the grid, shimmying and firing off a rather dangerous confetti cannon each time you make a winning combination.

Each winning combination is wiped off the dropdown grid in an explosion of fireworks, which is enjoyable to experience (at least the first few times). As you would expect the entire grid is awash with cheerful color, leaving players in no doubt that this is a celebration and therefore a good time is guaranteed.

Unfortunately this isn’t quite the case. Beyond this attractive carnival performer, there isn’t much else to keep you entertained, the game quickly falling into repetitive territory, and is ultimately more than likely to get on your nerves. Initially I thought the fun samba music would be a reason to stick around, but the pleasant tune is drowned out by the annoying, mechanical sounds of the reels turning.

Despite the game coming equipped with three different special features scattered through both levels of gameplay, it remains a little dull. This probably comes down to the repetitive nature of the features, but I concede that it’s a matter of personal opinion. Here’s what this carnival has to offer:

Dropdown Wins & Multipliers

This game doesn’t work with regular paylines or win ways, instead payouts are awarded when 6 or more identical symbols land in a cluster. A cluster is classified as any group of symbols that sit side by side or diagonally next to each other. When you manage a winning cluster, it’s removed from the grid and new symbols drop down to fill the empty positions. The Drop downs continue until no more winning clusters appear.

The best part about this feature, aside from the opportunity to collect several wins on every spin, are the multipliers that come attached. Each Dropdown win adds 1 extra multiplier. The multiplier increases until there is no win, at which point it resets for the next spin. There’s no maximum cap on the multiplier. It’s a great feature that helps you get more value from each spin, but in practice I almost never got more than a 2 x or 3 x return.

To enter the Free Spin fiesta you’ll need to land 3 or more Free Spin symbols anywhere on the reels. If you manage to land the symbols, here’s how many spins you get:

The feature can be re-triggered up to a maximum of 40 Free Spins. All players need to do is land more of the triggering symbol during the feature. The gameplay isn’t altered much during the feature. Players will still benefit from the cluster pays and multipliers mentioned above. The only difference is that the progressive multiplier will become sticky, keeping its value from spin to spin. This resulted in wins up to 12 x in my case, but there’s no cap on this.

The Bomb Feature

This feature is available during the base game, as well as during the Free Spins feature described above. It’s triggered at random during any initial losing dropdown. The Bomb explodes all reel positions in a star formation, clearing up to 16 reel positions. The player then has another chance to win. It’s essentially a boosted version of the regular cluster wins.

The feature is somewhat limited though, because only 1 bomb can explode per Dropdown. On the plus side, the Bomb will never remove Free Spin or other Bomb symbols from the reels, leaving you the possibility of attracting additional rewarding features on top.

Brazil Bomba carries volatility that’s set to 8.5 out of 10 on Yggdrasil’s scale. That’s considered a fairly high level, especially for a game with wins capped below 9,000 times your stake. But if those stats don’t bother you, then your wagers can be made on a range that starts at C$0.10, and goes up to a maximum of C$50.

Considering that many slots offer wagers up to C$100, this was a further point knockdown for big budget players. Game wins are helped along by cluster pays and an ever present progressive multiplier. And despite my reservations about the volatility and payout proportions, Brazil Bomba has a stable RTP of 96.30%, which is both respectable and fair — if nothing to get too jazzed about.

Considering the subject matter, I kind of expected the game to be more of a celebration. As it stands, I just whiled away many minutes on 50+ spins staring at the same character, pulling the same moves, spin after spin.

Yggdrasil could have done a lot more to the animation to boost excitement. As things stand it’s probably their least impressive creation in a good while. The gameplay similarly manages to lack pizzazz, and I felt rather bored after a time. I was also let down by the limited bet range and underwhelming top prize. This is one Brazilian carnival that’s unlikely to get many pulses racing.
