There are two types of people when it comes to Christmas carols: those who can’t stand them and those who pretend that they do. No matter which of these you are, we bet that the Carol of the Elves will make you stop pretending. When there’s a potential payout of €870,000 (or currency equivalent in CAD) you’re not pretending to enjoy carols anymore, you’re loving them and laughing all the way through the Black Friday crowd of shopaholics.

There are no real bonus features in this game, but don’t let that discourage you. Carol of the Elves rely on re-spins and multipliers to line your pockets. Also, there are no paylines to keep track of. This is not a bad thing. It makes this fairly low volatile video slot from Yggdrasil very easy to play because you don’t have to look out for scatters for free spins symbols anywhere.

We took this slot for a spin, pun intended, and we’re about to share all of our findings with you in this review. Do yourself a favour and keep reading before you start playing, there are some things you ought to know before you down a pint of eggnog and raise your stakes to the max.

  • Carol of the Elves is super easy to play as there aren’t any paylines or special symbols, including wilds, to keep track of.
  • Default max win is 5,800x but this translates into a max win of €870,000 and this is NOT a game with any kind of jackpot.
  • The re-spin feature is activated on every winning spin and will continue until there’s no winning combination or you reach the max win. That’s pretty nifty in our book.
  • Not everyone likes slots that start with a diamond shape across the reels. Sure, the play area expands with every winning spin, but since there’s only one position on left most reel, it’s easy to see what the outcome will be long before the reels stop.
  • Unfortunately there is no nudge feature to move symbols into winning positions, but if there would have been, the volatility would have to be much higher and the RTP would be lower. Still…

What is the theme of Carol of the Elves slot?

Picture all types of holiday decorations, take away the trees and the reindeer and you pretty much there when it comes to what this game looks like. You would imagine that with a name that suggests unwanted singing outside your front door, the kind of people at Yggdrasil for sure took this into consideration and went the mellow route.

It feels a little like the theme music was inspired by the first Home Alone movie, when Macaulay Culkin was still cute, but without the stress of having to fight off Joe Pesci with traps made out of toys and paint cans.

How to play Carol of the Elves slot

Carol of the Elves is played on a 5×5 grid and wins come from 3 or more symbols on adjacent reels. When you’re in the base game you will notice that all 4 corners are blocked by ice. This means that you have 1 spot open on the left reel, 3 on the second, 5 in the middle, then 3 and 1 again to form a diamond shape across the reels.

Every symbol that’s part of a winning combination will remove 1 ice block to give you more room for winnings on the subsequent re-spin. Once all ice blocks are removed you have the full 5×5 grid to play on. This is where you will have to start paying a little attention.

Winning symbols will either fill up the meter to the left (win multipliers) or to the right (extra life). These really come in handy once you’re playing on the full screen. Still, a winning re-spin means that you continue regardless. Anyway, here’s how they work:

Win Multiplier

After every winning spin you may gather up symbols depending on their colours to fill the multiplier meter. Every 5 symbols gathered will increase the win multiplier by 1x. After every winning re-spin the multiplier is applied to that spin.

Extra Life

This meter will also fill up with winning symbols. Again, 5 symbols means that you get an Extra life. So if a re-spin is not winning the game will spin again until you’re out of lives and hit a non-winning spin.

Once you’re out of lives and a re-spin is without winnings, the game will revert back to the base game with all four corners covered again. That’s pretty much it in a nutshell. As you can see, the gameplay in Carol of the Elves is very easy.

With no special symbols available, all symbols are paying symbols as long as they are on at least three adjacent reels, but symbols are also stacked which means that you can have more than one winning symbol on the same reel. The best paying symbols are, in order: Reindeer, Polar bear, Fox, Rabbit, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, and 9.

And before you ask, yes, this slot is of course available on all kinds of handheld devices from mobiles to tablets, laptops and desktops.

What is the RTP on Carol of the Elves slot?

The RTP of 96.2% is pretty decent when you consider the volatility. And with this being a slot from Yggdrasil, you will find that you can set limits such as bet and loss per session, day, week or month. Every hour you will also get a reminder to let you know for how long you have been playing and how much you’ve either won or lost during that period.

For a non-jackpot slot, paying out close to 900k on a single spin is pretty amazing. Fair enough, most of the stars in the universe will have to line up just the right way for this to happen, but do you think it’s any different from winning a progressive jackpot?

Looks like both you and Jiminy Cricket will be wishing upon stars like dreamers do this holiday season. You know how it goes: “Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in and sees you through. When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true.”

Final Verdict

Carol of the Elves

Frankly, we thought that just from the title, this was going to be another nuisance that had to be muted before we even started playing. But this game really grew on us and we actually got really into it. It’s fun to see the meters grow on both sides of the reels as the game keeps re-spinning and multiplying your wins after every spin.

During testing we managed to hit a few payouts of more than 100x which is a lot higher than your average payout from a normal free spins bonus feature. We can in good continence recommend this slot, not only during Christmas but all year round. Carol of the Elves is packing some serious heat under the hood.
