The tribal theme continues with this new slot from Play’n GO, but that’s where the similarities with its counterparts end. This has got to be my favorite slot to date, and with super high volatility, a payout rate of 96.55% and big wins working with frequent multipliers, I just know that I won’t bet alone. Slots have a reputation for being dull and repetitive, Contact has taken that stereotype and spun it on its head, working more like a game of Mayan Tetris, and keeping you on the edge of your seat with each spin.
Contact
Volatility: Super High
Exciting gameplay with a fresh take on standard slots.
There’s big money to be won with generous special features.
Once you hit one special feature it’s relatively easy to trigger multiple others.
Dead spins are a thing here, so don’t expect action with every whirl.
The game works more like Tetris than a standard slot, which isn’t everybody’s cup of tea.
The slot isn’t highly animated so you may be a little bored if you prefer big visual stimulation.

Theme and Background
Enter the ancient Mayan ruins of old Mexico. Here you’ll encounter charmed rock carvings, mythical creatures and some seriously impressive payouts. When I settled in to play a few rounds of Contact, I was sceptical to say the least. The slot name didn’t exactly sell itself and I was so over the whole aztec, inca, tribal nonsense. But in the end I had to eat my words because despite the overdone theme, the game has to be the best designed I’ve ever come across.
The graphics are beautiful and detail oriented, somebody definitely did some research there. There are nine carvings in total, so there’s a lot of variance in terms of matching up, but this doesn’t make wins difficult (more on this below). The soundtrack is excellent, I didn’t once want to hit mute, which is impressive for me. The low, dulcet tones are overlaid with the occasional tribal riff which breaks things up nicely.
Contact also works with a really nice colour palette, that’s very easy on the eye. I’ve played slots which have made a very strong attempt to blind me so this was a sincerely welcome change. Set within the ancient ruins of a Mayan temple, this slot has resurrected creativity within the industry, bringing clever slant to a tired scene.
Gameplay
Playing Contact may seem a little odd initially, as it doesn’t require the usual line up of matching symbols. Instead, you need to collect clusters of matching blocks. The non-matching blocks will disappear and the remaining will clunk down to the bottom of the grid, where your winnings are tallied. There are also many special features to get your head around.
Here’s the breakdown:
Win Multiplier
This means that if you fill the entire 2nd, 4th or 6th row with winning symbols, a multiplier of 2x, 3x or 4x respectively will be applied.
When you succeed in filling out either of these rows, you’re also awarded a free spin and one of three Special Features, which will be applied at the end of that individual free spin.
Bonus Round & Super Bonus Round
Trigger this when you reach all the way up to the top row with winning symbols. If you manage to fill the entire grid with winning symbols you’ll trigger the Super Bonus Round.
Each bonus round kicks off with three free spins, and the super bonus round with six free spins.
During both these, matching clusters will remain on the screen through to the next spin, increasing your chances of filling the grid with matching symbols significantly. If you fill rows 2, 3, 5 or 6 during the Bonus Round with matching symbols you’ll be awarded a win multiplier of x2, x3, x4 or x5 respectively. But if you fill rows 1, 4 or 7 with winning clusters, you’ll also be awarded one of the following three Special Features.
Block Destroyer
When you trigger this feature it will destroy three of the multiplier blocks rather than just one. It also increases the multiplier up to 30x — that could mean some seriously big cheese!
Symbol Upgrade
This feature will literally upgrade all the winning clusters to the next high value symbol in line.
Extra Free Spins
Land this feature and you’ll score yourself three free spins, which means even more chances to trigger these valuable bonus features.
Payouts and Wagering
High variance/high reward is a feature that’s become a common trademark of Play’n GO slots and Contact is no exception. As a high volatility slot, you’re unlikely to pick up small winnings on every other spin as you would do with some other low volatility slots. Contact is all about the big wins, and most of these will stem from the Bonus and Super Bonus Rounds. Here you’ll be in with a chance to trigger the Block Destroyer special feature which will award you a 30x multiplier that can lead to wins of 1,517.5 times your total bet.
Playing Contact can get a little bit distracting as you’re inadvertently drawn to the desire to watch as many random matching clusters form as possible. But what you should really be looking out for is a cluster that builds all the way up to the top multiplier. Crack this feature and you’re golden, as you’ll be rewarded with a bonus round that could inundate you with a myriad of free spins and modifiers. At this point you’d have to be pretty unlucky not to wind up on the receiving end of a nice little payout that the ancient Mayans would have traded all their gold for.
Final Verdict
Contact
First off I really think this slot ought to have been called ‘Cluster’. This would have gone a lot further toward hinting at the way the game works. But semantics aside, Contact is hard to beat in terms of design and functionality. There’s something very satisfying about watching the blocks line up and clunk down. When they start to stick and stack up it’s downright exciting. The arrangement gives you frequent opportunity for wins, both big and small. Contact offered something fresh and non-monotonous with its smart design and solid opportunities for bonus rewards.
