Divine Showdown - Theme and Background

The theme is definitely centered on gods of old, covering several bases across history and time. In Divine Showdown’s world, the universe has collided to bring together four of the most powerful gods to ever grace storybooks and the silver screen. You’ll see the Norse God of Thunder (Thor), the Chinese Monkey King (Wukong), the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and War (Athena) and the Egyptian God of Death (Anubis) all fight it out to impress players while they wield their weapons and conjure up their powers.

It’s visually a very appealing slot, with crisp graphics that are heavy on detail. The individual gods have been designed with accuracy and respect, avoiding any cheesy cartoonish style. Across the reels are symbols for each of the gods (each god randomly generates an individual special feature — but more on this below) plus a series of other symbols that won’t create nearly as much excitement. That’s because the designers chose to mix in A, K, Q, J and 10 royals, which I was a little disappointed by. The backdrop resembles a dramatic mountain scene, atop of which sits an elaborate acropolis. Storm clouds churn angrily, like a premonition for what’s to come.

There’s a fair bit to keep your eye on with Divine Showdown, and the slot aims to reward players who can survive the undeniable stream of dry spins. Each god offers its own special feature, but there are also a couple fringe features that help to boost your balance.

Godly Special Features

Each of the 4 gods battling it out come with their very own super power. The only catch is that they’re triggered at random, so there’s nothing you can do but wait for them to dance across the grid and conjure their magic.

When they do, the player is awarded a respin where you’ll benefit from one of the following reel modifiers:

Wukong will award a random number of wilds.
Anubis will transform 1 or 2 random symbols into wilds.
Athena synchronizes 3 reels so that they all land the same symbol.
Thor transforms all higher value symbols into the Thor symbol for increased wins.

Multiplier Meter

Above the reels, to the left of the game logo, sits a stone frame with a diamond shaped light in the middle. This is the Multiplier Meter, and it can become active at random on any given spin. It awards the player with a multiplier boost that can range from 2 x up to 10 x. I would have liked to see this come into play more often, and higher multipliers wouldn’t have hurt either!

Free Spins

This feature is triggered when you land 3 Scatter symbols on three differing reels during a single spin. It took me a good while to activate it.

The Scatter is a gold shield embedded with 4 etchings, one for each of the gods in battle. Once triggered, players will be able to choose which God they’d like to represent them in the battle that makes up the free spins. The god you choose will stand by the left-hand side of the reels, and a battle reel will spin throughout the feature.

The player only starts with 3 spins, but the battle reel can award additional spins or change up your opponent. The random multiplier feature is also in play during the free spins.

Of all the gods,Thor is given the highest value in this slot. He’s only outdone by the Wild symbol. Considering the game’s theme, I was surprised by the relatively low worth (and distinct lack of divinity) of the symbol values. There were a lot of things I liked about the slot. The theme itself is a good one, bringing together Gods from across the planet to battle it out in a really exciting way. I wasn’t sure I liked the fact that almost all the game’s features are triggered at random because it makes spinning feel a little pointless. It was also quite a long journey triggering the Free Spins feature, which will price out a lot of players.

On the positive side, I liked the player inclusion during the bonus game, where it’s possible to choose which god to represent you. Overall I would say that the game has definite potential, but those dry spins can be ungodly.
