Gold Canyon - Theme and Background

The first thing I enjoyed was the country and western soundtrack, but that’s not necessarily a positive attribute for all players. I’m just personally a huge fan of all things cowboy. The musical twangs are perfectly set off by the occasional horse whinny and the trundling and rattling of freight carts. This makes sense because the backdrop is a mountainous scene, where train tracks lead the way up into the hills, waiting to be mined for gold.

The graphics manage to look extremely masculine and grown up, doing away with all the cartoonish traits that usually come along with slots carrying a Western theme. The Cowboy is joined on the reels by a series of symbols ranging from gold nuggets, Wanted posters, Sheriff badges, dynamite and horses. These are rounded off by the low value symbols of A, K, Q and J, which appear to have been hammered out of steel, allowing them to blend in nicely with the overall theme.

Gold Canyon - Gameplay

Gold Canyon’s special features aren’t particularly innovative, they’re simply re-skinned versions of things we’ve seen time and time again. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, after all, if something works well then why change it? Here’s how this slot’s features work.

Gold Canyon Cowboy Wild

Expanding Wilds

The Cowboy is our Wild, and he offers a particularly effective way of ramping up small wins in the base game. He appears on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5, which means he’ll land fairly often. When he does make an appearance he’ll expand the full length of the reel (3 symbols stacked), giving players the best shot possible at forming winning combinations. He can appear on multiple reels in a single spin, and the Wilds substitute for all symbols except the Scatter.

Gold Canyon Dynamite Free Spins

Dynamite Free Spins

The reels frequently come alive, lit up by sticks of exploding dynamite. This will happen when a minimum of 3 Scatters land. Each Scatter, represented by dynamite charges that periodically explode. When they do, new symbols will drop into their place, giving you a chance for a second win in the same spin. But this isn’t where the big wins come from. For each Scatter you land, players are awarded a free spin. That means a minimum of 3 free spins.

During the feature, landing more scatters will top up your free spins, meaning it can be indefinitely re-triggered. It’s easy to land the scatters so be prepared to extract a fair bit of value from this feature.

Gold Canyon Double Up Gamble Symbol

Double Up Gamble

After a win you can choose to gamble the amount won and try to double your prize. All you need to do is try to guess which side a flipped coin will land on, heads or tails. A correct guess means you get to collect your win, but an incorrect guess means you lose it all.

If you guess correctly you’ll be given the opportunity to guess again, potentially doubling your winnings once more. You can continue in this vein until you guess wrong or if you choose to collect your winnings and continue with the regular slot play. You don’t get the opportunity to double up on anything won during the Free Spins. You can choose to gamble the full amount or just 50%.

It’s a very risky, but potentially hugely rewarding, special feature. I succeeded tripling a win up to C$500, not bad for a couple minutes and a few flips of a coin.

Gold Canyon - Payouts and Wagering Limits

Because of the Double Up feature, the maximum win of 4,774 x your bet is actually fairly feasible. Of course, flipping a coin to bring home a win is a highly risky tactic that will appeal only to a certain type of player. It’s not an expensive slot to play, with bets starting at 0.20 and stopping at 20.00. High rollers would have to consistently engage the gamble feature to make up the big wins they’re chasing down.

The 96.13% RTP is perfectly acceptable, but players will have to put up with a fair few dry spins before they see a return on their bet spend. The Expanding Wilds mean that there’s a solid opportunity for decent wins in the base game. At the absolute top end, with players spinning at the maximum bet, there’s the potential for a winning combination of up to C$10,000, this stemming from a 500 x your total bet win.

Final Verdict

Gold Canyon

After careful consideration I would have to award this slot a shiny, gold, star-shaped Sheriff’s badge of approval. That being said I wouldn’t recommend it to all players. Seeing as the really big wins are probably only engaged through the Double Up feature, I wouldn’t advise it to players who are content to slip away quietly with a small stash.

The theme is enjoyable, if you’re into cowboys and the gold rush era, and aside from the odd bout of dry spins the action comes around fairly frequently. In short I would say that if you’re the kind of player who enjoys the sweat of an all or nothing situation, then Gold Rush could be just the ride you’ve been searching for.
