Hit It Hard - Theme and Background

The theme is unquestionably retro fruit machine, but the classic design also carries something of a pinball vibe built in to the special features. Even if the style isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, ELK did a good job with this one, largely thanks to the game mechanics, which we’ll get into in another section of this review. Visually there’s nothing wrong with the slot, so long as you don’t mind lots of flashing and lurid neon lighting.

The only real problem lies with the reduced size of the grid. I’ll never understand why designers think it’s a good idea to fill the screen with inconsequential background imagery and reduce the space for the valuable parts. Because the game is designed in the style of a retro fruit machine, the symbols reflect this theme. Fruits like lemons, cherries and watermelons are scattered across the reels, together with classic symbols like BAR and the number 7. Less usual is a 2 x Wild symbol which helps to boost base game wins (but more on this later).

Despite the slot’s simplistic theme, the gameplay during the special features can be tricky to wrap your head around. This isn’t helped by all the flashing animation, but I eventually figured out what was what.

Wilds and Multiplier Wilds

The wild symbols can be quite rewarding, substituting for all symbols, but unfortunately they only land on reels 2 and 3. On the plus side, the wild that lands on reel 3 could come with a multiplier value of 2 x, 3 x, 4 x or 5 x. The best part is that if you do land the multiplier wild on reel 3 and don’t win, you’ll trigger the game’s Wild Respin feature (more on this next).

Wild Respins

If you failed to lock down a win with a Mutiplier Wild then that third reel will lock in place and the remaining reels will respin. This is a good opportunity to land a big prize because a lucky hit of red sevens and on a 5 x wild multiplier will make you really glad that Multiplier Wild failed to produce a win. This feature gets triggered in and out of the bonus game.

This is the big daddy of the slot’s features, but you’ll need to land the dice bonus symbol on the middle position of the third reel to have a stab at the riches it conceals. The feature kicks off by turning the dice symbol into a 10 x multiplier, so you’re guaranteed at least one win there. The real bonus game focuses on the designed up mechanism above the reels, where you’ll set off on the “Start” arrow. Dice will roll, which determines how many steps you move, and also how many free spins you get on the regular reels (between 1 and 6). Each spin on the regular reels can land multiplier wilds from 2 x to 20 x, these combined with the central 10 x multiplier wild can boost your wins to up to 200 x. There’s definitely more good than bad when it comes to Hit It Hard. I loved the classic style, but I did wish the grid sat a little larger on the background. The game play was fun, with a bonus feature that contained an absolute feast of possibilities.

And because the special feature triggered so frequently, it never got dull, which is high praise indeed for a slot. The only real criticism I can point out is that the game’s hit rate is down by around 3% in comparison to similar slots. I forgave this in light of the medium to high volatility ranking and the decent 96.03% RTP.
