John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure - Theme and Background

John Hunter and his second Pragmatic Play adventure doesn’t make the best first impression. I felt the graphics are fairly weak, causing the slot to appear sort of unfinished and slightly dated. This isn’t the first time I’ve felt dissatisfied by the appearance of Pragmatic Play slots, but it’s becoming even more obvious compared with the spectacular graphics churned out by competitors.

This slot follows our hero, John Hunter, as he trawls through ancient Aztec artifacts in search of some treasure or other. He’s equipped with the usual gear (whips, hats, fetching outfit) and up against the usual threats of snakes and bewitched ruins. Quite frankly I’ve played so many slots following this theme that I would be completely incapable of telling one from the other.

Across the reels is John Hunter himself, sporting a stetson and a goatee. He’s joined by a snarling panther, a rattlesnake, a toucan, a hat and whip, and a flaming torch. These symbols are accompanied by quite blank looking A, K,Q, J royals. The wild is a golden tribal mask that substitutes for all symbols except the Bonus symbol. This bonus symbol is responsible for triggering the free spins feature. The entire package doesn’t inspire much excitement, but perhaps the game’s features will make up for that.

John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure- Gameplay

With my expectations pretty low upon first viewing the slot, I hung all my hopes on some spectacular special features. It wasn’t a great start when I discovered that the game hosts only a single free spin feature, but many slots perform excellently with single feature set ups, and this could be one of them.

John Hunter scatter symbol

Free Spins

Collect 3 or more of the bonus scatter symbol (this is represented by the gold engraved sundial that the Aztecs used for telling time) to activate the free spins feature. The number of spins you get to kick things off with is determined by a spinning wheel. The number you land on dictates the number of free spins you get. The more scatters you land, the bigger the numbers on the wheel:

  • 3 bonus scatters will give you the chance to unlock 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 spins
  • 4 bonus scatters will give you the chance to unlock 10, 15, 20, or 25 spins
  • 5 bonus scatters will give you the chance to unlock 15, 20, or 25 spins

But that’s not all. During every free spin, a bar at the top of the grid will spin horizontally, assigning a multiplier at random which ranges from 2 x to 10 x. And if that’s not enough, if you land 2 or more bonus scatter symbols during your free spins then you’ll be awarded a set of extra spins on top:

  • 2 bonus scatters will give you the chance to unlock 3, 4, 5, 10 or 15 free spins
  • 3 bonus scatters will give you the chance to unlock 4, 5, 10 or 15 free spins
  • 4 bonus scatters will give you the chance to unlock 5, 10 or 15 free spins
  • 5 bonus scatters will give you the chance to unlock 10 or 15 free spins

Whatever multiplier ran at the time you unlocked your extra spins will apply across all the new spins. This means that if the winning free spin was set to a 10 x multiplier, you could have 15 extra spins each with a chance for wins at ten times your stake.

John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure - Payouts and Wagering Limits

John Hunter’s on the hunt for big treasure and he’s only going to find it during the free spins feature, so let’s not kid ourselves that we have a chance for anything critical happening in the base game. All pay symbols except for the scatter can appear stacked on any spin during the base game and free spins. They start at the low end, represented by the generic card royals A, K, Q, and J. These will award players 0.4 x to 0.5 x your bet for five of a kind.

Things improve slightly with the flame torch, the hat and whip, toucan, snake, panther and John Hunter himself. Hitting five across the reels of any of these will award you wins ranging from 0.75x to 4x your bet. The tribal mask Wild only appears on reels 2, 3 and 4, so wins will be less frequent than you get with other slots offering a more generous appearance of Wilds.

Final Verdict

John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure

It would be nice if multipliers also worked outside the game’s only special feature. I did start to feel a little like I was living for the free spins and extra spins, which didn’t roll around often enough for my liking.

That being said, once I triggered the feature I found myself with a considerable win thanks to a combined 45 spins free spins and extra spins, each set to a multiplier, so I definitely made up my bet spend. I like the slot’s functionality, despite the lack of cutting edge graphics and multiple features. It’s really simple to understand and allows the player to wring out maximum value from the free spins feature.
