It’s the fourth installment of Pragmatic Play’s John Hunter series, and I’m beginning to wonder if it’s high time that the provider let this particular narrative slide into the slot archives. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with bringing back a popular game character, but I’m hoping that this time there’s a little more that sets the gameplay apart from its previous incarnations.

What is the theme of John Hunter and the Book of Tut slot?
Aside from the fact that this game is one of four John Hunter games, the individual theme is also something you’ve seen before. Ancient Egypt is an old friend to the slot world, where providers have cashed in on images of pharaohs, scarabs, pyramids, sloping sand dunes and all the rest. John Hunter and the Book of Tut is fully committed to this vein.
Unfortunately despite about a decade passing since the first game release and this newest one, the graphics still retain a slightly vintage feel, and I don’t actually mean this in a positive way. When I first hit the spin button I couldn’t believe the noise that exploded out from my speakers. It was a high pitched, digitized disaster that had absolutely no correlation to the game’s Egyptian theme.
Visually, Book of Tut’s 5×3 reel is designed to look exactly as you would expect. Golden sand dunes set a dessert scene, and palm trees, the pyramids and the River Nile all making they expected appearance. Across the reels are the basic low value symbols of 10 through to Ace, plus the clean cut, smirking face of John Hunter himself. He’s naturally the top payer, but there are also other high paying symbols made to look like scarab beetles, cats, and King Tut’s carved likeness.
How to play John Hunter and the Book of Tut slot
If the originality was the first let down of this game, then the fact that there’s only one special feature to look forward to is likely to be the final nail in the sarcophagus. Is this singular feature enough to earn your forgiveness? Luckily they’ve chosen a fan favorite to run with.
To get your claws into the game’s only special feature you’ll need to land 3, 4 or 5 book scatter symbols anywhere on the reels.
- 3 Scatters will get you a bargain basement 2 x payout plus 10 Free Spins
- 4 Scatters will get you a 20 x payout plus 10 Free Spins
- 5 Scatters will get you a whopping 200 x payout plus 10 Free Spins
Before you can get started a special expanding symbol is chosen at random. This is a fairly long drawn out affair as you watch the pages in a chunky book flip, landing on an image that corresponds to a symbol. Whenever your selected symbol lands during the Free Spins game, it will expand vertically to take over the whole reel. Fortunately the symbol will pay out wherever it lands, even on non-adjacent reels, but it will only expand if you match the symbol within a winning combination.
Pragmatic Play made up for the limited features by allowing the Free Spins game to be re-triggered indefinitely. You’ll need 3 or more book scatters to pick up another 10 Free Spins, but this is technically unlimited.
What is the RTP on John Hunter and the Temple of Tut?
This John Hunter romp hits a 5 out of 5 on Pragmatic Play’s volatility scale. Our hero dominates the spotlight by being the most valuable symbol of all. If you can land his chiseled jawline five times in a single spin then you’ll be the very lucky recipient of 500 x your bet. Next up is the Book symbol which works as both a Scatter and a Wild in this game. Five on a payline of this dusty tome and you’ll scoop up a fresh 200 x payout. Three of this symbol will also grant you entry into the game’s only special feature. But before you get too excited by the numbers, you should be aware that Book of Tut is a seriously high variance game. That means those big wins might involve a bit of a waiting game that may very well leave recreational players wishing they had another run at Starburst instead.
If you’re in it to win it big, there’s only one route to glory, the aforementioned Free Spins game. Here you’ll be in with the chance to land a maximum of 5,500 times your bet. The max win per bonus game spin depends on which special expanding symbol you get allocated, like so:
- Q, J or 10 symbols offer up to 100 times your bet
- K or A symbols offer up to 150 times your bet
- Scarab beetle or cat symbols offer up to 750 times your bet
- Pharaoh symbol offer up to 2,000 times your bet
- John Hunter symbol offer up to 5,000 times your bet
Should I play John Hunter and the Temple of Tut slot?
John Hunter and the Book of Tut
If you read through this entire review then you might have got the impression that I wasn’t a huge fan of this game. The facts are as follows: the game isn’t innovative or particularly exciting, there’s only one bonus feature and you’ll encounter your fair share of dry spins. However, these things aside, players who like risky yet straightforward gameplay will probably appreciate Pragmatic Play’s no-nonsense approach. That being said, risk takers will probably be slightly disappointed by the 5,500 times your stake maximum prize.
