Perhaps it comes off the back of the recent Aladdin revival, but Magic of Sahara, brought to us by Microgaming, is channeling some very seductive Arabian Nights vibes. And it may be the case that oversize and gems and copious amounts of golden sand are all the rage right now, but we’re more interested in whether or not the pretty design bolsters our bank balance.

With a maximum win of 2,222 x your bet, there’s certainly a lot of potential in the symmetrical numerology. And at Medium volatility, it seems like players are in with a fair chance. But does the 95.29% RTP let the slot down? Read on to find out.

Magic of Sahara - Theme and Background

With the word ‘Sahara’ in the title, it isn’t hard to guess what sort of visual experience you’d be in for. Vast desert sands, characters swaddled in Arabian dress, and many coins and gem stones are strewn across the grid and backdrop. The symbols dominating the reels are more intriguing than most, representing the nomadic traveling lifestyle of desert people. You can expect a Tuareg man and woman, camel caravans, bowls brimming with precious gems, and a set of Royals designed in a sandy hue.

The grid is overlaid on a traditional nomad rug, complete with a trim waiting to be decorated by tokens, which you collect as you spin (more on this later). There isn’t much animation throughout, so you might get tired of staring at the same old static images. The soundtrack is soothing and enchanting, not something I say about slot music very often. Unfortunately it only plays during a spin, so go for auto spin if you want to enjoy a constant stream of hypnotic Arabian tunes. Overall the theme is slightly underwhelming, with sub par graphics and the general feeling that they neglected to commit to the storyline at a hundred percent.

Magic of Sahara - Gameplay

I think Microgaming were trying to do something a little different with this slot, incorporating the anticipation of collecting a set of tokens combined with instant wins to keep players riveted. To a certain extent it works, but here’s the full breakdown of what you can expect.

Magic of Sahara Symbol

These are represented by the ‘Magic of Sahara’ symbols, and they’re able to stand in for any other symbol except the Scatter (the bowl of gems symbol). The Wilds will only appear on reels 3 and 4 in a stacked format, but if you trigger the Free Spins feature then they can land across all reels. The symbol is also extra valuable because it also happens to be the highest paying if you can manage 3 or more on a single payline.

Magic of Sahara Scatter Symbol

The afore mentioned bowl of precious gems symbol is your ticket in to activating the slot’s main feature – Free Spins. This pot of jewels is also the game’s Scatter, and you’ll need 3 or more in order to trigger the feature. It’s also the second most valuable symbol of the slot, paying out in combinations of 2 or more, which means it isn’t too hard to reap the rewards.

Magic of Sahara free spins symbol

Free Spins

As we’ve just discussed, land 3 scatters and trigger your 5 Free Spins. The best part about this is that all wins during the feature are set to a 2 x multiplier, so there’s potential for large wins here. The down side is that scatters and wilds are removed during the feature, so there’s absolutely no way to re-trigger the feature. The base number of free spins you get is 5, but this can be increased if you’ve succeeded in collecting any tokens (more on this next), awarding 1 extra free spin per token collected.

Magic of Sahara Token symbol

The pretty charms that line the rug hosting our grid are the tokens. You begin with none, adding them on as you land the symbol of the rather mysterious ‘Man in Blue’. They serve a dual purpose, either to top up the Free Spins feature as described above, or to trigger an entirely new version of free spins. If you succeed in making up all 25 rug tokens, then a game of 30 free spins will be automatically triggered, giving you a huge opportunity to win big.

The negatives? Even if you land two of the token symbol in a single spin, you’ll only be awarded one. Also, triggering the Free Spins feature will use up any tokens collected automatically, so you’ll have to start from scratch if you’re hoping to make that collection of 25.

Magic of Sahara - Payouts and Wagering Limits

The low paying symbols are no surprise in Magic of Sahara, made up by the generic A, K, Q, J, 10, and 9 symbols. These pay out between 4.44 x and 8.88 x for 5 of a kind — definitely not the lowest payout we’ve seen. Strangely, the man in blue who awards those enticing tokens has been pegged as a low paying symbol in this slot, so you have no further need for him beyond token collection.

Next in line is the camel caravan, followed by the man and woman in arabic dress. These pay out between 27.77 x and 55.55 x your bet for 5 of a kind. But if you really want to hit big in the base game then you need to look out for the Wild (the ‘Magic of Sahara’ symbol), which comes stacked on reels 3 and 4.

Hitting 3, 4 or 5 on a winning payline will reward you with 6.67, 44.44 or 133.33 x your bet respectively. The slot’s max win of 2,222 x your bet can be achieved during the free spins feature at the top bet, thanks to the 2 x multiplier.

Final Verdict

Magic of Sahara

As slots go, this one was fairly enjoyable. The theme itself was interesting, if not executed as well as I would have liked. I thought the graphics needed some work and there was a distinct lack of animation that failed to draw me in.

I especially liked the token collection, but I thought players would have benefitted from the opportunity to opt to continue collecting or cash in at the free spins. The wins were tidy and came in fairly frequently during the base game, but the wins from special features were a little underwhelming and couldn’t be re-triggered.

I’d say give this Arabian night out a spin, enjoy the music and the potential big wins.
