Swedish game designer Nolimit City has gone full American. Prohibition-era Manhattan to be precise. This 5 reel slot comes with 243 ways to win and some very flashy special features. Running on high volatility with a top prize of 1,215 x your bet, it’s hard to tell if the slot is worth putting your cash on the line for. I gave these glammed up reels a whirl to find out if it’s worth getting your glad rags on and stepping into the past with Bugsy and Betty on this high-glitz slot adventure.

Manhattan Goes Wild - Theme and Background
Sleek, elegant and reeking of old American glamour, with this slot you’re in danger of sticking around too long from the sheer desire to remain a part of it all. The theme is very obviously New York during the Prohibition, but if you can’t imagine what that might look like, just think the Great Gatsby. The backdrop is the Empire State and Chrysler buildings piercing the New York skyline at dusk. The grid is ornate and decked out in full Art Deco style, a popular choice in the 1920s and 30s.
The exact location seems to be an upmarket cocktail bar. Our two main characters, Bugsy and Betsy, are dressed up to the nines and looking as though they’re having a fabulous night on the town. Across the reels are a series of interesting symbols that fit very well with the theme. The Scatter is represented by a martini glass, and even the A, K, Q, J, 10 symbols manage to make en effort for the occasion, shedding their usually dreary appearance. The remaining symbols are an assortment of vintage cars, microphones, champagne, and diamond earrings. When you’re just one symbol away from triggering the bonus game (more on this below) the music is overlaid by a drum roll, which really helps to generate anticipation and excitement. Though there is an argument that it also increases disappointment if the feature isn’t triggered. The whole effect is completed by a jazz-inspired soundtrack that’s pretty hard to switch off — a high achievement in my eyes.
Manhattan Goes Wild - Gameplay
The very stylish Bugsy and Betty are at the center of all the action, presiding over the slot’s main features. The set up isn’t particularly complicated, with each feature triggered in fairly standard ways. Your best friend will be the martini glass Scatter, but read on to find out why.
Bugsy and Betty Go Wild
This feature is randomly triggered, which can be a little frustrating as it doesn’t give you anything to shoot for. But both Betty and Bugsy are capable of suddenly appearing and triggering a special feature. This causes all Bugsy or Betty symbols that landed on that spin to transform into Wild symbols. Each symbol will take on a golden appearance and give you an increased chance are landing multiple winning combinations. Of course, the feature could also result in no wins at all, which happened a few times.
Wild Party Respins
This feature is triggered if either Betty or Bugsy land fully stacked across the reels. If this happens, the stacked symbol will stick in place and a respin will play out. Because the stacked and locked symbol acts as a Wild, winning combinations are more likely. However, once again this feature definitely doesn’t guarantee any wins.
Manhattan Free Spins
This is the feature that holds your biggest hope for a considerable win. I triggered it 3 times during my trialling, but only once was the total win anything worth celebrating. You’ll need 3 or more Scatters (the martini glass) to kickstart the feature. Manage this and you’ll get started with 7 free spins, which doesn’t sound like very many but you’ll be able to pick up unlimited extra spins along the way. That’s because the free spins game will launch on a new grid with 6 different colored meters. Each meter corresponds to a symbol, and once you fill up a meter you’ll be awarded 1 extra spin or 3 extra spins, depending on the symbol collected. The feature will only end once you’ve run out of spins.
Manhattan Goes Wild - Payouts and Wagering Limits
Purely looking at the value of each symbols, you’d be right not to feel very optimistic. The low paying symbols are obviously the card royals from 10 through to A, awarding 1.5 x to 1.8 x your stake for five of a kind. These are closely followed by champagne bottles, diamond earrings, vintage cars, and microphones. Hit five of these symbols across the reels and you’ll walk away with anything from 2 x to 3 x your bet. The high paying symbols are Bugsy and Betty together with the Wild, each of which will award 5 x your bet when five land on the reels.
Standing alone they won’t generate much excitement, but thanks to Wild combinations in the base game wins are often boosted well above this. If you land a golden Wild and sticky stacked Wild in a single spin then you can expect a nice chunk of change. The Manhattan Free Spins feature, while not consistently great, can prove to be very rewarding. But a full screen of Wilds is how you’ll unlock the slot’s maximum win of 1,215 times your bet.
Manhattan Goes Wild - Final Verdict
Manhattan Goes Wild
This is a pretty tricky slot to drop the hammer on, because I both loved it and hated it at the same time. It’s a terrific-looking slot. The visuals are undeniably top drawer, and the theme was carefully put together with a lot of thought behind the entertainment factor. The gameplay was also above average, with an animated bonus game that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Unfortunately I was a little disappointed by the payouts, which often didn’t materialize despite engaging a special feature. Large wins are possible in the free spins game, but not easily achieved. The maximum win is attainable, but it will require a heavy dose of luck. Go for Manhattan Goes Wild if you’re after top notch entertainment, and you’ll probably make a small profit too, but it’s unlikely to be a game changer.
