Theme & Background

Masquerade Balls have held some kind of weird fascination for a long time. They became a staple of society in Carnival season in the 15th century. But Charles VI of France already held some kind of costumed ball to celebrate his upcoming marriage in 1393.

Nowadays, we associate masquerade balls with high society and even royalty in period pieces. Normal folk would rather go to a costume party where they show their face and instead disguise everything else. That is coincidently where costume parties seem to be coming from as well.

In the Masquerade slot, you play in front of a dimly lit foggy street and you hear the chatter and the clanking of cutlery and glasses of the attendants. This adds a nice little piece of immersion but is also a little distracting. We would have liked to hear the music more often, not only when the reels are spinning. The only time you get to listen to the nice waltz music constantly is, if you set the gameplay to automatic spinning.

As we mentioned above, you play Masquerade on your average 5 reels. The row layout is a little unusual however, with a 2-3-4-3-2 layout. This makes for some interesting possibilities on the 20 fixed paylines.

The low-paying symbols in the game are the card values 10 to A and they are designed in a luscious way, so that they really stand out. 10 to Q pay the least, while K pays a little more with A being the most valuable of the low-paying symbols.

On the high-value end we have a top hat, a pocket watch and a sigil ring with a lady in a mask being the most valuable symbol of the game.

Masquerade keeps it fairly simple and rudimentary when it comes to bonus features, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any. If you want to read about them, check out the sections below.

Main Features

golden masque

Golden Masque

Whenever individual Golden Masques land on your reels, they will spin and reveal a mystery symbol behind them. All masques will reveal the same symbol, giving you a much better chance at a win.

In some instances, they might even randomly duplicate and spread even more Golden Masques over your reels.

royal masque

Royal Masque

The Royal Masque is basically a Golden Masque but bigger – much bigger. This Royal Masque covers all of the middle three reels and will spin to reveal a single mystery symbol for a guaranteed win.

Payouts and Wagering Limits

The entry fee for the Masquerade starts with a very budget friendly and sensible $0.20. But since the maximum win is 1,000x your bet, you might want to crank up the stakes. Because while $200 aren’t bad off an initial bet of $0.20, $100,000 off the maximum bet of $100 is where the real money waits.

You do have to be a little careful however since the volatility is at least medium and even leaning towards the high end. So, you won’t see wins (especially high ones) very frequently and will need a sizeable bankroll to get what you want from this slot. This might be one of the reasons why Red Tiger themselves market this slot more towards the VIP segment of players.

Another reason for that might be the below-average RTP of only 95.22% making this one of the modern slots that gets its players back less of their invested money than usual.

Final Verdict

Masquerade is a luscious and luxurious slot that oozes VIP. That’s not to say that the average player wouldn’t have fun with this slot. The graphics are on point and the atmosphere that is created gives you the feeling that you’re actually attending a fancy masquerade ball.

But the low RTP and the almost high volatility might put off some players that just want to play their slots for some easy fun and wonder. The slot is also very scarce on bonus features. With the two features that are there basically being the same just in different sizes.

Masquerade is clearly marketed towards the VIP segment of players, but if you enjoy a little bit of luxury and would like to see how it feels to be at a really fancy ball, go right ahead and give this one a
