ELK Studios have created a slot that can only be described as Super Mario meets Dungeons and Dragons. I must say, despite my initial reservations, the combination is a successful one.

The slot runs with 7 reels and pays out with a cluster feature that’s always a love or hate experience for players. A lot of attention has been paid to the theme, which is immersive and engaging. This always poses the danger of drawing the player away from the real reason they came, which is to spin reels and hopefully win some cash. Are these Knights here to bring us fortune on our quest? Or is it a mere distraction technique?

Micro Knights - Theme and Background

Micro Knights rabbit ELK Studios went to a fair amount of effort to create a backstory for this slot. It all happens in a Kingdom faraway, where the distant towers of Chatoux Prix dominate the skyline. The dragon king Chalcedony rules with an iron fist, determined to eliminate all threats, no matter how minor. So he orders all knights to take charge outside the city walls to keep the kingdom safe.

Our main characters are three small yet mighty Knights; Sir Smash, Sir Charge, and Sir Count. These don’t appear as symbols, but preside over the special features. The slot’s icons include a crown (the Scatter) and a golden chalice (the Wild). The remaining symbols are nods to medieval times and include meat on the bone, water wells, arrow targets, and mushrooms. The high paying symbols are rabbits, frogs, goats, and bulls (this one is the most valuable of all).

Everything would have been wonderful where it not for the strange size of the grid. It’s less noticeable on mobile, but playing on a laptop or tablet shows that the reels are so reduced in size it becomes almost impossible to make out the individual symbols. Instead players are treated to an expansive and immobile backdrop of rolling hills. An odd design choice to be sure.

Micro Knights - Gameplay

Micro Knights is a slot you’d describe as feature-rich. So sit tight readers, there’s a lot to get through here.

Avalanche Cluster Pays

Avalanche Cluster Pays

Frequent slot players will be familiar with this feature. Symbols fall down to fill the symbol grid, and winning clusters explode, allowing room for additional symbols to drop down from above. Avalanches can keep on for quite some time, generating win after win in a single spin.

Meter and Queue

Meter and Queue

These are persistent in both the base game and during the free drops game. Each time you get a winning cluster your meter will be charged up. The amount that gets charged is proportional to the size of your win. If the meter becomes fully charged during a single spin, a flag feature is awarded (more on this below).

The Queue is where symbols go after they’ve been pushed off the grid by the Charging Knight (more on him next). The fall in line on a little road below the grid. Here they’ll wait for an opportunity to pass through a little door, enter the grid and increase your chances making winning clusters.

Charging Knight

Charging Knight

A randomly activated feature, the Charging Knight sticks around on the left side and is always ready to come to the rescue. He randomly charges the queue at the end of an avalanche flow by pushing everything that comes in his way down into the queue.

Smashing Knight

Smashing Knight

This feature is also activated at random. The Smashing Knight oversees the symbol grid in the upper left corner and randomly smashes his mace so that the entire game view shakes and all the symbol groups in the queue increase by one.

Counting Knight

Counting Knight

This guy doesn’t actually do much, he’s more of a mascot for the all-important meter. He also seems to wake up a little as the flags are awarded. Quite frankly he serves no real purpose to the game — but perhaps the designers felt three Knights were better than two!

Flag Features

Flag features

Fill up the meter and earn a flag, simple enough. However, you can’t skip the order as each flag feature is activated in sequence. So unless you keep hitting on avalanche wins you’ll struggle to get past the first two flag features. Here’s how they’re laid out:

  1. Inferno (red flag) – All low value symbols are removed from the symbol grid which initiates a new avalanche flow. This will hopefully mean enough winning clusters to get you onto the second flag.
  2. Extra Wilds (pink flag) – 3 to 15 Wilds are placed around the grid at random.
  3. Super Size (purple flag) – 2 x 2, 3 x 3 or even 4 x 4 symbols land on the grid.
  4. Charge (orange flag) – 2 to 5 rows of symbols are pushed down to the queue.
  5. Epic Charge (blue flag) – A guaranteed re-trigger of the avalanche flow as the whole symbol grid is emptied and all symbols are pushed to the queue.
  6. Boosted Queue (green flag) – The order of the queue is ignored and all symbols in line are used simultaneously.
Free Drops Bonus Game

Free Drops Bonus Game

The most elusive of all the features, free games are triggered when you land three scatters (the red and gold king’s crown) fully visible on the reels. The bonus game consists of 5 free spins, during which the win meter and the queue are sticky and do not reset between spins. This combination is recipe for large payouts, and it’s also how you can access the slot’s max 2,500 x win.

Micro Knights - Payouts and Wagering Limits

Bets can be placed starting at C$0.10 and going up to C$100. During the base game, the highest paying symbol is the Bull, and a winning cluster of 20 or more bulls (not an easy task) will return a payout of 250 x your bet. The game’s top payout sits at a nice and healthy 2,500 x your bet, which is good enough to tempt all sorts of players as it translates to a potential maximum prize of C$250,000. The game runs with Medium to High volatility and an RTP of 96%, the combination of which translates into an active game with fairly regular payouts.

Final Verdict

Micro Knights

Let’s begin with the things I didn’t like. As I mentioned already, the grid size bothered me. I’m also not a fan of the fact that many of the flag features will never see the light of day during the base game, thanks to unrealistic expectations placed on the cluster pays.

Outside of these things I found Micro Knights to be a really exciting and fast-paced slot. A single spin can set off a chain reaction of features that might not pay out in huge amounts, but are decent enough to keep you hooked. I think this slot is going to appeal to most players who enjoy a little fantasy adventure, but don’t mind the 2,500 x bet limit. If you’re one of those players, then charge on good Knight and see where this quest takes you.
