Monster Pop is a monster-themed slot from Betsoft that’s hoping to appeal to the inner child of slot players. It’s rocking a fairly sophisticated design, with a grid that can expand to accommodate more winning combinations. This works well with the cluster pay functionality, coming together to get players more value per spin — well, that’s the theory anyway!

Looking at the numbers, you might not be too impressed. The bet range starts at 0.25 and stops at 25.00, plus the top prize only reaches as high as just a shade over 2,270 times the wager. But big wins are often trumped by frequent wins, and Monster Pop does have a fair few special features on offer. Let’s find out which way the wind blows with this one.

Monster Pop - Theme and Background

Monster Pop Star Symbol Monster Pop is set on some distant planet or other — a place where there’s been little to no investment in infrastructure. It’s all stalagmites and stalactites (I never know which is which), glowing hunks of rock and rather depressed looking vegetation. The only bright spark on this rather dismal planet are the actual inhabitants themselves. The visual of super cute ugly monsters isn’t new to the world of slots, but I haven’t grown tired of it yet. Betsoft’s monsters are little more than colored blobs with eyes (or sometimes just a single eye) and a mouth. As monsters go, these aren’t particularly frightening. In fact, some of them appear downright cheerful, pulling silly expressions and grinning for no apparent reason.

Once you meet these monsters you’ll understand why their planet hasn’t developed much beyond a pile of rocks. The slot is set to some cutesy music which isn’t particularly offensive, though it does get a little repetitive. The slot’s overall design is good (if you like cartoon-ified games) and the bright colors and cheerful undertones will appeal to players who don’t like to take themselves too seriously.

Monster Pop - Gameplay

We’re already well aware that Monster Pop’s limited betting and winning options are never going to deliver life-changing single prize hauls. But this doesn’t mean that players can’t walk away with a decent chunk of change with the help of the slot’s multiple special features. Read on to find out if these are primed to deliver real value.

Monster Pop Cluster Wins

Monster Cloner

This guy features in the base game and his job is to expand the game area by adding new rows and/or columns by duplicating existing ones. It will also add wild symbols to the game area, allowing players a further boosted chance at scoring winning clusters. How does the feature trigger? You’ll need to land the Monster Cloner symbol (which is a blue-ish rock emitting pink light). The grid will continue to expand as more of these symbols land.

Cluster Wins

Rather than working with pre-set paylines and win ways, Monster Pop employs Cluster Win functionality. This means that wins are created when the landed symbols are matched in small groups (or clusters). Once a winning cluster has formed, it’s removed from the grid and new symbols will drop down to take their place, offering players the opportunity for an additional win.

Monster Pop

Monster Fury Re-spins

These act as a sort of consolation prize for players to try and collect a prize after a dry spin. If you spin the reels to no effect, you have the opportunity (it’s totally random) to trigger the Monster Fury Re-spin. If the feature has been activated then it will cause a fresh cascade of symbols, offering another chance at new wins.

Monster Pop Free Spins

Monster Pop Free Spins

And what’s a slot game without the lure of a Free Spins round? Monster Pop does have one of these, but it’s not super easy to trigger. Players will need to land at least three Flaming Sphere symbols to get going (these symbols literally look like a burning ball of flame). On the plus side they can land absolutely anywhere on the grid.

Once the feature is triggered players will be granted 7 Free Spins plus an additional Free Spin for every Flaming Sphere symbol. I have no idea why Betsoft set it up this way (it’s unnecessarily difficult to explain). However, if you land 3 symbols then you get 10 Free Spins (7 + 3), if you land 4 symbols you get 11 Free Spins (7 + 4). This continues up to a maximum of 10 landed symbols. The feature can also be re-triggered by landing more Flaming Sphere symbols during the gratis spins.

Monster Pop - Payouts and Wagering Limits

Betsoft chose to pair Monster Pop with a fairly limited bet range. This is a strange decision — especially when you consider the slot’s rather low maximum prize. In any event, players will only be able to place bets that start at C$0.25 and stop at C$25. You have the option to set up the bet as you see fit, but only within the range that the slot provides.

The game’s top win sits at a very specific 2,270.6 times the wager, making the biggest (and most unlikely) haul, this being a rather deflating C$56,750 plus some change. Monster Pop is furnished with Medium volatility, which should be some consolation to players who are mortally offended by the slot’s shockingly low RTP of 94.67%. Considering the industry average sits somewhere around the 96% mark, I was surprised that Betsoft would launch with such a low number.

Final Verdict

Monster Pop

Monster Pop was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I liked the design, the animation and the proliferation of special features. It was entertaining, well created and definitely a nice break from all those serious-looking slots getting released.

The problems lie with the math model. I just don’t think it’s offering players much value — or at least not as much value as it could. Sure you have the chance to hit big, but it’s less likely than with the majority of other slots. It’s a shame because I loved Monster Pop, I just wish it had a monster RTP to match.
