Step into Ancient Rome and take your place alongside one of history’s most infamous Emperors. Nero himself was in power for 13 years, and being in power during Rome’s most devastating city-wide fire is his most cited legacy. Luckily there’s no chance of players hanging around long enough to do too much damage. Thanks to the very high volatility ranking of Nero’s Fortune, the majority players probably won’t have the bankroll to hang around for more than a few minutes of gameplay. But let’s not jump ahead.

Nero's Fortune - Theme and Background
3D graphics are one of the slot’s biggest design selling points because it gives the entire game a very immersive effect. It’s accompanied by an epic soundtrack that builds gradually to an intense orchestral score — whoever is behind this should be intensely pleased with themselves.
In the background is the ancient city of Rome, and while it does appear to be bathed in the glorious hues of sunset, these appear to meld into flames from time to time. During gameplay, multipliers are added to the reels to the sound of soaring flaming arrows. Am I getting too descriptive? That’s because the design on Nero’s Fortune is just phenomenal — definitely one of the best I’ve seen for 2020.
The symbols used in the game include J-A royals, and 4 high paying symbols. These are eagles, wolves and lions. The red ruby symbol offers the highest win potential, with clusters of 12 or more paying out at 150 times the stake. The Wild is represented by a ‘W’, which can substitute for any symbol except for the Scatter.
Nero's Fortune - Gameplay
It’s a bit of a shame that Quickspin didn’t add one more special feature to Nero’s Fortune. I really felt that giving players an opportunity to unlock more than just the Free Spins game would have added that final, necessary touch. Read on and find out if you agree.
The game doesn’t have set paylines. Instead it pays out using ‘tumble mechanics’. This works the same way as the cluster pays you’ve likely experienced with other slots. If symbols form a winning cluster then they’re removed from the grid and new symbols drop down to take their place, offering another chance at a win. This can potentially go on indefinitely for increased wins on a base game spin. The tumble mechanics are available throughout the game, even in the special features.
This is a base game feature, and it’s pretty much just a progressive multiplier function that’s been made to look complex, thanks to some expert design. Once a winning cluster is formed and removed from the reels (as described above), a multiplier will be created in the empty symbol positions. If there’s another cluster win that reveals the multiplier, the win is added up by this value. The multiplier remains in place even if it’s not discovered by the next cluster win.
At this point another multiplier is fired onto the reels. The multipliers will remain under the symbols until they’re revealed by a win in a later tumble sequence. When no winning clusters are formed, the tumble resets and all multipliers are removed from the reels. It sounds like a great feature, but it isn’t particularly easy to rack up consecutive wins.
Flames of Nero
In truth, this is where the game’s only value is hidden. If you can land 3 or more Bonus Scatter symbols in a single spin, you’ll kick off the Free Spins bonus game. The more scatters you land, the more spins you get, like this:
- 3 Bonus Scatter symbols in a single spin will award 10 free spins
- 4 Bonus Scatter symbols in a single spin will award 12 free spins
- 5 Bonus Scatter symbols in a single spin will award 14 free spins
The Free Spins come attached to multipliers, which really are the star of the show. Before each tumble, multipliers will be placed under randomly selected symbols. If the Multipliers are revealed by a cluster win, then these are added to the win. Each flaming arrow is a 1 x multiplier, but these are all added together, which is great because it’s pretty easy to reveal several at a go. The best part is that the multiplier remains from spin to spin, so additional multipliers discovered in new spins get added on to the winning total. I was up to a 14 x multiplier by the end of my 12 free spins.
Nero's Fortune - Payouts and Wagering Limits
Players can place their bets with multiple values ranging from C$0.10 and C$100. But think hard before you lay down any cash, as this game gets a 5 out 5 on Quickspin’s volatility ranking. This means you’re unlikely to hit wins at regular intervals, but it does mean that the wins you do hit will probably form a considerable haul. This is helped along by the above average symbol values and the frequency with which you can pick up big, super, mega, and epic wins — like this:
- Big Wins (25 x your bet) come every 1 in 158 spins
- Super Win (50 x your bet) come every 1 in 343 spins
- Mega Win (75 x your bet) come every 1 in 545 spins
- Epic Wins (100 x your bet) come every 1 in 909 spins
These might seem like long shots, but they’re actually better odds than several other games released in 2020.
The most rewarding symbol in the game is the red gemstone which pays up to 75 x for twelve or more symbols in a winning cluster. Ultimately, what you’re playing for is the chance to hit as close to the 8,100 x maximum prize as possible. If players get really lucky with the multipliers (in the Free Spins round these become easy to rack up) they could be very well rewarded for their patience.
Nero's Fortune - Final Verdict
Nero’s Fortune is yet another slot to fall within Quickspin’s tumble range of games. It’s rocking a solid theme and impressive design. That being said, the max prize of 8,100 times the bet is lower than its compatriots. The volatility is cranked all the way to the top here, but the gameplay is engaging enough to keep you locked in. My advice? Get in, grab some wins and get out quickly — before the city goes up in flames around you.
