Niagara Falls was born of a collaboration between Yggdrasil and the people behind Northern Lights, and it’s one of those slots that works very hard to be initially deceptive. At first glance I found myself heaving a sigh of frustration. One glimpse of fruit and BAR symbols on the reels and I had already designated this game into yet another attempted retro revival.

But I was wrong. With 5 reels, 20 paylines, high volatility and incredibly well performing special features, I was made to swallow my words (or snap judgements). Read on to find out what I loved so much about Niagara Falls.

  • The theme was quirky and varied, providing decent entertainment.
  • The special features were very rewarding and frequently triggered.
  • The slot responded well to play across all devices.
  • You can’t re-trigger the Free Spin feature
  • The way that the symbols combine to form wins is somewhat complicated
  • The RTP could be a little better

Theme and Background

I didn’t immediately warm to the theme, mainly because I was perplexed by the graphics. With a name like Niagara Falls I was expecting cascading water, aquatic background music and altogether something more serene.

Instead, this slot takes on an old school arcade game theme, backed by a very jagged looking waterfall that was more reminiscent of an inhabited planet rather than the pride of Ontario, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. Bizarrely, the music took on a tune that definitely sounded like something out of a British 1930s music hall, giving me a sudden hankering for a gin and tonic.

Across the reels is a combination of classic symbols (such as fruits, number sevens, bells and Bars) and the occasional tribute to Niagara Falls, but not nearly as much as you’d expect. Even the bonus features, when triggered, have very little to do with water and cliff faces.

All in all, I found the theme slightly befuddling but definitely engrossing. The graphic quality is high, and the slot also incorporates a lot of movement and animation, which serves to really increase player engagement.

Niagara Falls incorporates some pretty exciting game functionality that totally belies the retro basic feel of the slot. With each spin there are multiple ways to win and, I have to be honest, while I was very excited to be winning, it took me a while to figure out why. Let’s break it down.

Coin Drop Bonus

Coin Drop Bonus

The fifth reel includes a gold coin symbol during base game play. If it lands across the reels (I got in twice in about ten minutes), the coin will detach itself and travel up to the coin slot at the top of the grid. The coin will then bounce across the symbols, leaving a trail on its way down to the bonus strip. If the gold coin lands in an empty slot, then better luck next time. But if it makes its way into a winning slot, you could be about ready for a cash injection. Here’s what happens if the gold coin hits its mark:

  • Land on Wild and see all the symbols hit by the gold coin turn wild
  • Hit Free Spins to trigger 5 free spins
  • Shake means that you’ll get a shake added to your counter (this will only matter if you can then trigger a Cash Fall Bonus)
  • Getting a Stacked Spin will allow you 1 re-spin with stacked symbols
  • Hitting 1 of 4 Multipliers (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x) will obviously multiply your win accordingly
Cash Fall Bonus

Cash Fall Bonus

This feature is triggered randomly during the base game, and its inspiration comes from those classic coin-laden arcade games that see coins cascading over different levels. In Niagara Falls the coins will scatter across the reels, resting in either an empty slot, or a winning slot with a pre-determined cash value.

You could also land Super Coins which will double the value of the winning slots. Any accumulated shakes will come into action here. At the end of the feature you’ll be immediately paid out your combined winnings.

Sticky Wild Free Spins

Sticky Wild Free Spins

The third and final special feature is an interesting combination of free spins and wilds. To see what these two can do together you’ll need to land a Whiskey Barrel symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5. You’ll then be awarded 5 Free Spins which have the power to turn entire reels into sticky wilds (but you’ll have to land a wild to achieve this).

If you’re lucky enough to get there, these will remain in place for the duration of the feature.

Payouts and Wagering Limits

With a maximum bet of 400, triggering a bonus feature could see you rake in some seriously big money. Of course there’s no guarantee that the stars will align but the possibility is certainly there. At 1,000x your bet, the top win isn’t the most impressive we’ve seen, but wins come frequently and combine to pay out pretty generously.

The highest paying symbol is the Wild, which offers 10x your bet if you can land 5. All wins can be multiplied up to 5 times, so there’s some decent money to be made if you’re willing to up your bet.

Final Verdict

Niagara Falls

The 1930s arcade theme isn’t for everybody, and you’ll be forgiven if you walk away in favor of a more fast-paced slot. The graphics and animation, while not designed to get your pulse racing, are top quality and varied enough to hold your interest for a considerable chunk of spins.

I’m always nervous about high volatility slots like Niagara Falls, because I dread those lengthy dry spins. Surprisingly I experienced very few of those with Niagara Falls, and the wins came faster and larger than expected.

I really feel like the potential with this slot is substantial, and if you hit the free spins and wilds during the special features you could land yourself a magnificent five figure windfall, particularly if your bets are at the top end of the scale. My advice? Book out some time off and see if you’ll find yourself awash with cash on Niagara Falls.
