Originally, the idea of ninjas can be traced back to feudal Japan, where they were known as covert agents or mercenaries. They were hired mostly for espionage, sabotage, infiltration and assassination. Contrary to the samurai who were considered military nobility, ninjas were seen as dishonorable.

The ninja jumping over the reels in Ninja Ways seems to fit that archetype fairly well. And he is also a dead ringer for popular anime character Naruto with an added face mask. The background of the screen is filled with typical Japanese houses and even the playing field seems to be housed within one.
