This dark and stormy slot is born from a Rabcat and Microgaming collaboration that’s definitely targeting fantasy fans. The high spec graphics and fantastically immersive theme immediately had my interest. The grid is made up of 5 reels and 25 paylines and, despite its undeniably sinister vibe, it’s set to just Medium volatility. Players who are ready to go a few rounds with Norse gods can do so for a potential cash prize of up to 1,000 times the bet. But should players risk their cash to brave the winter chill at all?

North Storm - Theme and Background
If we’re choosing to be pedantic then I might point out that North Storm isn’t exactly based on an original idea. Other slots like Asgardian Stones are rocking a similar theme, encouraging players to interact with Norse gods for a shot at glory. However, that doesn’t mean North Storm is one to dismiss. On the contrary, this Viking-meets-the-Stark-family slot has its own brand of appeal, largely helped along by extremely high spec graphics. There’s animation throughout, with flurries of snow blowing across the grid at regular intervals to promote consistent immersion.
I loved the sheer originality that went into the creation of each symbol. And even though many of these are your basic K, Q, J, and 10, they’ve been intricately designed to melt in perfectly with the rest of the theme. In the background is the chilling noise of wind whistling in a snowstorm. It was so perfectly paired with the slot that the sound alone caused a chill to ripple down my spins. The combined effect is one I won’t be forgetting any time soon as it was more reminiscent of a top notch PlayStation game rather than your basic slot.
North Storm - Gameplay
While North Storm isn’t exactly overflowing with special features, designers have been very clever about packing as much value as possible into the few it does possess. Here’s a little more detail on what help is on offer to get players to those bigger wins during gameplay.
Any winning combination triggers Bonus Falls. This is essentially the equivalent of a cascading reels feature. Once your winning combination is paid out, the remaining symbols fall down to close the symbol gaps and the empty spaces on top are topped up by a new wave of symbols.
Each successive win is paired with an increasing multiplier (see next). Bonus Falls are repeated for as long as winning combinations are formed. And while technically this could mean infinite spins, the reality is that you’ll be lucky to get more than two combinations in a single spin.
These are in play throughout, during the base game and the free spins game. The only difference is that once you trigger the free spins, you’re further rewarded with increased multipliers. During the base game multipliers are 1 x, 2 x, 3 x, and 4 x.
However, once you activate the free spins game (more on this next), multipliers are doubled to 2 x, 4 x, 6 x, and 8 x. In both circumstances players move up one multiplier for each bonus fall win. With a new spin the multiplier resets.
When you land three bonus symbols on the same payline, you’ll receive eight free spins. While the feature can’t be re-triggered, landing additional bonus symbols will add on an extra two free spins. But if you’re hoping for the potential of unlimited free spins then you’ll be disappointed because the feature is capped at a maximum of 20 free spins. As mentioned above, players will also benefit from bigger multipliers. Prizes will be multiplied by 2x, 4x, 6x or 8x, which can make for some pretty impressive payouts.
The wolf’s head Wild Symbol can replace any other symbol on the reels – except for the Free Spins symbols mentioned above – to create a winning combination.
North Storm- Payouts and Wagering Limits
North Storm quickly gained favor with me because it pays out decent wins quite frequently, which suits players like me who enjoy consistent reassurance. Obviously players who favor bigger wins in exchange for a series of dry spins will disagree.
However, as a medium volatility game with a top prize of 1,000 x and a top maximum bet of C$50, high risk players are unlikely to make North Storm their slot of choice. The top paying symbol in the slot is the gold rune stone that pays out at 100 times the bet. However, the lowest paying symbols offer values that range between 1.5 x and 5 x. While these might not be life changing amounts, they’re higher than you get with most other slots.
But it’s the cascading symbols paired with multipliers that give you the biggest chances of success during the base game. Repeated wins on the same spin can be paired with a maximum multiplier of 4 x. The free spins game is where the slot’s maximum prize is unlocked, thanks to doubled up multipliers across a potential of 20 spins per game.
North Storm - Final Verdict
North Storm is undeniably a beautifully-created slot, with intricate visuals and thematic elements to match. It’s not going to make anyone fantastically rich, a fact that will immediately turn some players off. But if you’re like me, and you value entertainment as well as prize potential, then I truly believe this is one of the better options out there. Overall I would deem North Storm to only be inappropriate to players who require a high bet spend and want to reach for massive wins. That being said, the game experience and cascading reels are big pluses in my book. I would recommend most players give this slot a chance, if only to experience the freezing temperatures radiating through your screen.
