Every once in a while a slot will be created that surprises everyone. This doesn’t just come down to the gameplay, it must also be married to the truly creative genius of the provider. Punk Rocker is such a slot, taking generally awe-inspiring or even formidable individuals, and dropping them into a pile of ludicrousness. And the win potential on Punk Rocker is a mad as its subject matter, sitting at over 15,000 times the stake!
But let’s look at the chances of actually walking away with a wealth of prizes, and find out if this is about as likely as stumbling upon a photograph of Albert Einstein with a mohawk in real life.
What’s punk rock anyway? This was a genre of music that emerged in the mid-1970s. It was pioneered by musicians that had something to say about the political and social state of society. Nolimit City has been inspired by this era, adding a layer of not so subtle irony to entire scene.
Taking some of the most iconic visual images and people of the last century, they’ve given them a punk rock makeover. Many of them have even been improved if you ask me. On the reels you’ll see heavy duty boots, a knuckle duster, a skull biting a Molotov cocktail (the Wild), a mixer switch, a monkey and an anarchy sign. These symbols are joined by a punkified Sean Connery, Mona Lisa, Albert Einstein, and Winston Churchill.
The soundtrack is predictably punk rock music, which is upbeat, fun and energizing. I gotta say, of all the themes I’ve experienced recently (from the dull to the downright awful) this one is my current favorite, and I think it might hold that throne for good long while.
Fun fact: Nolimit City had previously included Kim Jong Un as one of its characters, however in the couple of weeks post launch, he was replaced instead by Sean Connery. I can only speculate why this swap took place, but I would guess it had a lot to do with not alienating particular audiences.
Punk Rocker - Gameplay
The gameplay in Punk Rocker is just about as crazy as the subject matter. There’s a huge range of special feature, which keeps everything moving and intensely exciting.
xWays Mystery Symbol
Put simply, these are mystery symbols that, upon landing, can transform into 2 to 4 symbols that expand the reels and go up to 6 symbols high. The game’s characters can even be super-expanded up to 20 symbols high. Altogether this feature could offer you up to 46,646 ways to win if all reels are expanded to the max.
The Wild is represented by a menacing skull about to detonate a Molotov cocktail. These behave in the regular way, by substituting for any symbol except the scatter. However, they also expand upwards on the reels to increase your chances of winning combinations.
This particularly rewarding feature will trigger when you land two scatters. This will set off an explosive respin of locked Molotov Wilds and a 6th reel that is unlocked for at least 729 win ways. During the feature, the scatter symbols will turn into sticky wilds. If you land more wilds, they become sticky too, and you’re awarded another respin. The feature only ends if you stop landing Wilds, which is what makes it so potentially generous.
Anarchy Free Spins
This is the first of two free spins games, and it’s triggered when you land 3 Scatters. Once the feature kicks off (with 8 Free Spins), these same Scatters will become Moving Wilds. This means that they’ll shift to random positions for every spin.
Civil War Free Spins
The second Free Spins game of the slot also starts with 8 Free Spins. This one will be a little bit more elusive, as it requires players to land 4 Scatters. As with the other game, the Scatters will transform into Moving Wilds during the feature, which also runs with 6 reels and 729 win ways.
So essentially the only real difference between the two games is the number of Moving Wilds. If that doesn’t have you rocking out with enthusiasm then you’ll probably also want to know that both Free Spins games come with 5 different extras. Keep an eye on the London Tube train on the top of the grid. The wagons represent different reel modifiers. The modifiers only work on reels with moving wilds on them, and can be:
Wild Multiplier that add a multiplier of either 2 x, 3 x, 5 x, 10 x, 15 x or 25 x
xWays stacked 4 symbols high
1 to 3 Extra Free Spins
All reels stacked 6 symbols high for 46,656 paylines
An extra Moving Wild
Feature Buy Functionality
This feature was added a little after the launch. It allows players to buy into the two Free Spins games for a pre-set amount.
Punk Rocker - Payouts and Wagering Limits
The lowest bet possible in Punk Rocker is C$0.25, and the largest is C$100. That’s a near perfect range for all kinds of players. Punk Churchill is the most rewarding symbol of the lot, paying out at 1, 3, 6 or 20 times your bet if you land 3, 4, 5 or 6 symbols on a winning payline. Here’s what the full suite of symbols pay:
Winston Churchill pays 6 x for 5 and 20 x for 6 symbols on a payline
Mona Lisa pays 3 x for 5 and 10 x for 6 symbols on a payline
The monkey pays 2 x for 5 and 6 x for 6 symbols on a payline
Albert Einstein pays 1.6 x for 5 and 4 x for 6 symbols on a payline
Sean Connery pays 1.2 x for 5 and 4 x for 6 symbols on a payline
The anarchy symbol pays 1 x for 5 and 3 x for 6 symbols on a payline
The mixer switch pays 1 x for 5 and 3 x for 6 on a winning payline
The Molotov cocktail pays 0.8 x for 5 and 2.4 x for 6 symbols on a payline
The knuckle duster pays 0.8 x for 5 and 2.4 x for 6 symbols on a payline
The boots pays 0.8 x for 5 and 2.4 x for 6 symbols on a payline
Punk Rocker - Final Verdict
Whether you’re into punk rock or not, this slot is whistling the right tune. Of course, the high volatility could be slightly too dicey for some players, but those willing to risk the stakes could be rewarded by wins of up to 15,072 x the bet.
The two different free spins features, as well as all the slot’s other features, do make up for the fact that the symbols in the base game generate only small wins. The bottom line? Give this bizarre slot a shot, and get ready for the punk rock revival.
