Microgaming has turned out another treasure hunting-themed slot, but this one is distinctly higher brow than its competitors — at least visually. We’ll have to go into more detail to find out if it pays out better than its competitors. In support of this theory, the 5 reel, 25 payline game comes with high volatility and some very rewarding features which could culminate in a sizable 4,500 x your bet win.

Our relic-seeking characters are a trio of archaeologists wearing looks of great determination, but are they serious enough to help us exit the cave-like grid with a tidy profit?

  • Rolling reels mean you’ll frequently get more than one win on a single spin
  • The C$500 max bet makes it a perfect choice for high rollers
  • The bonus features are rewarding as well as entertaining
  • Relic Seekers is available to players in Canada
  • It takes a while to understand how the special features work
  • The occasional run of dry spins might drain the balance of smaller budget players
  • Multipliers are too low for the volatility level

Relic Seekers - Theme and Background

The slot’s three main characters are archeologists who have travelled to a place called Dragon’s Vein on the trail of the remnants of the Huangdi-era Yellow Emperor. They go by the names of Nora, Free Man and Professor Morgan (no prizes for guessing which one the professor is).

The graphics are exceptionally well made, and the grid is packed with awesome period details. There’s no real soundtrack, just thematic audio effects that really add to the suspense of the slot. Other than that it’s just the sound of crunching stone as the reels roll.

The tempo only really kicks up when the special features are activated, adding a layer of adventure movie music that was very enjoyable and added to the anticipation. Across the reels are a series of stone tablets etched with unknown symbols.

The rest of the symbols are made up of our three explorers, a lantern Wild, a metal shield (the Scatter), and wolves. Thankfully there isn’t a card suit in sight — hallelujah! The grid itself looks to be set in some underground shaft or cave, and to the left is a bar which goes up and down depending on how many wins you get on a single spin, but more on this later.

Relic Seekers - Gameplay

I was initially a bit bewildered by this slot’s features, because there’s constant movement and activity, which makes it hard to take in all at once. But after a few spins it all starts to seem very logical. I’ll help you save time by describing each feature below.

Relic Seekers Wild Symbol

Relic Seekers uses Wilds traditionally, so I thought I’d kick things off with the simplest feature. They’re represented by the lantern symbol and substitute for all other symbols adjacent to it except the Scatter.

Relic Seekers Free Spins Symbol

Rolling Reels

The slot utilizes rolling reels to layer value on top of each spin. I’m not sure why it is but these seem to pay out more frequently than in other games implementing the same feature. The best part is that the reels retain their rolling effect even during the free spins (more below). If you succeed in making winning combinations, the matching symbols are pulverized and removed from the reels. New symbols will fill their vacant spaces.

There’s no limit on how many wins you can have within a single spin.

Relic Seekers Wild Meter Symbol

Symbol Turns Wild

To the left of the reels is a meter which monitors your wins within a single spin. The meter is divided into three, with each character marking the level every two wins. For each win, the meter will climb up one notch. As you climb the meter you get to turn each character Wild on the reels, boosting your winning potential hugely. This isn’t as hard to achieve as you might think, and the feature accounted for a good chunk of my winnings.

  • After 2 successive winning spins, Nora turns wild
  • After 4 successive winning spins, Professor Morgan also turns wild
  • After 6 successive winning spins, Free Man also turns wild

Free Spins

This where all the huge wins are hiding, but you’ll need to land at least 3 Scatters to kick things off. Once you do, the feature will get you started with 10 Free Spins. Land another 3 scatters and the slot will reward you with an additional 10 free spins.

During the feature you’ll also be collecting keys which are marked at the top of the specially created grid. Collect 3 keys and youll get 2 extra spins, collect 6 and youll get another 2 extra spins on a 2 x multiplier.

Relic Seekers - Payouts and Wagering Limits

Relic Seekers betting opens at a minimum level of C$0.25 for one spin, which will automatically set the line bet to $0.01 across all 25 paylines. Players can go ahead and increase their bet all the way up to C$500, leaving the door wide open for high rollers. The RTP isn’t the best we’ve seen, but it sits firmly at the average level, so there’s no need for any big disappointment there.

With a top prize of 4,500 x your bet, there are likely to be a lot of people interested in giving the slot a go, despite the fact that the slot’s theme won’t be every player’s cup of tea. What is intriguing is that the base game alone offers a maximum win of 2,250 x your bet, and it’s rare to get so much value outside of special features. In fact prizes in the base game are the highest I’ve experienced from a Microgaming slot in a good long while.

Relic Seekers - Final Verdict

Relic Seekers 150 x 150

Final Verdict

Relic Seekers

If you have the budget to wait out the free spins you’re almost guaranteed a very nice payout. That being said, there’s still decent prizes to be had in the base game. In terms of strategy I would say that players should hold out for the special features, make a profit and then cut and run. As much as I enjoyed this slot it became immediately obvious that it’s also a quick way to lose your profits if you stay too long.

Aside from this, the only real downside is that the 2 x multiplier in the Free Spins feature feels a little low considering the volatility level of the slot. I would definitely recommend this slot to players who like to break a sweat, as well as to those who enjoy a painstakingly well-designed adventure.
