This is the fourth slot in the Rich Wilde series and our slick protagonist is back on a brand new adventure. My first impression was that the graphics on Tome of Madness were the best yet, the designers obviously having stepped up their game since the last Rich Wilde release.

Our setting is an alternative universe that goes by the name of Cthulhu Mythos. We find ourselves inside a dusty crypt, complete with eerie statues and vaulted ceilings. Across the reels are a series of gemstones, skulls, rings and daggers.

The top paying symbol, outside of the wilds, is a Cthulhu amulet (yes you read that right) which looks very sinister indeed. Rich Wilde himself makes an appearance on the reels helping players to rake in the treasure.

Happily absent are the low value Royal suits, the designers having put their heads together long enough to come up with a complete set of original symbols. There isn’t much of a soundtrack, this taking a backseat to the noise of the clanging and clunking wheels. As a result I couldn’t listen for very long, as I eventually began to feel like I was sitting in a construction site. The tempo increases even further as you unlock special features – which we’ll get into below.

Gameplay

Players need to land clusters of 4 or more matching symbols to get paid out, and the cascading style of the reels really helps you along. But what really, really helps are the built in special features. Rich Wilde’s symbol acts as a multiplying wild, and the tome of madness symbol is another type of wild. In fact, this slot incorporates many different wilds. So let’s get into how they’re activated and what sort of rewards you can expect.

Eye Marks

These are dotted about the grid at random (about 11 or 12 of them). If you form a winning cluster where these are located then you’ll get two wilds added to the reels, helping you to increase your chances of a winning combination.

Charge Portal

To the left of the grid is a meter that gets charged up each time you make a winning combination. As the meter racks up its charge with some funky looking symbols, you’ll be able to trigger a series of 4 special features:

7 symbols will see 2 special wilds added to the grid
14 symbols will see 2 special wilds added to the grid, plus you’ll have a chance to trigger the Abyss Portal Effect if one of your awarded wilds forms part of a winning cluster

Abyss Portal Effect

This is when an entire row or column that contains a special wild is removed, allowing for a new batch of symbols to take its place. All removed symbols are collected in the Portal, helping you toward your next feature activation.

Void Portal Effect

This feature will see a symbol removed from the grid at random (multiple symbols if more than one of the same appear), and new symbols will cascade in to take its place. All removed symbols are collected in the Portal, helping you toward your next feature activation.

Other World Free Round

Racking up 42 symbols in your charge portal will trigger this feature where you’ll be awarded one free round with three portal effect simultaneously enabled. If you’ve collect more than 42 symbols, then an additional portal effect will be adder per 3 extra symbols up to a maximum of 7. The portal effects are:

Special Wilds, meaning you’ll have 4 of these added to the reels
Abyss, meaning you’ll have 4 of these added to the reels and the opportunity to trigger the Abyss Portal Effect
Void, meaning you’ll have 4 of these added to the reels and the opportunity to trigger the Void Portal Effect

Mega Wild Cthulhu

This is the most powerful of all the wilds. You activate it once you’ve opened all the eye marks after forming wins in their place. The Mega Wild Cthulhu will then be triggered, moving down with every spin until it disappears from the grid.

To score a win, you need to form clusters of at least 4 winning symbols, either vertically or horizontally. Because of the cluster effect of the reels, each successful combination is replaced by new symbols, giving you a refresh shot at a new win. As mentioned above, the octopus amulet is the most valuable symbol outside of the wilds. Land 4 of these and you’ll get a double payout, but if you manage to get 12 in a single combination (wilds would help here) then you’ll get paid out at 10 x your bet.

The Rich Wilde symbol acts as a 2 x multiplier. The green, blue, red and purple gems are the lowest paying, ranging from 2x to 10x your bet for a cluster of 10 or more symbols. This sounds like a lot but it’s actually the equivalent of 5 of a kind on a regular slot. The masks, rings, amulet and dagger pay out from 30x to 100x for 10 of a kind in a winning cluster.

Rich Wilde is a very handsome fella with a sleek wardrobe, and he does a good job of standing beside the slot opening and closing his book. The slot is chock full of features and I can’t remember the last time I had to try and figure out so many wilds. In reality you’ll just be hitting the spin button and hoping for the best.

For such a high variance slot the maximum pay out should be higher, but there’s still a decent amount to shoot for. The added softener of a jackpot would have gone down well also, but players will just have to content themselves with the special features. My adventure with Rich was a good one, but I wouldn’t recommend conservative players embark on this journey to distant lands.
