Play’n GO is transporting us to Ancient Egypt, where the Pharaohs have long since been embalmed and golden scarabs that crawl across the reels. This 5 reel, 20 payline slot has been beautifully designed, offering a high volatility experience at an RTP of 96.53%.

I went into this slot review hoping the game would play out in a fresh way, helping it to stand out from the provider’s other very popular games like Book of Dead, for which this seems to be a spiritual successor. Read on to find out if my little trip into the Egyptian past helped me to stack wins higher than the pyramids.

Rise of Dead - Theme and Background

Rise of Dead Mummy Symbol 1

Rise of Dead embodies some fairly creepy qualities, beginning with the three zombie Pharaohs that dominate the grid. The overall vibe is dark and foreboding, with cold colors and hard edges.

The grid is bordered by hieroglyphs like the ancient Egyptian ankh, and you’ve got to admire the research that went into the slot design. A fluttering golden scarab stands in as the Wild, substituting for all symbols except the Scatter, which represented by a papyrus scroll.

The rest of the symbols are made up by some rather dull A, K, Q, J, 10 symbols, which was surprising because I imagine there would have been a wealth of symbols and objects to choose from in their place. The soundtrack matches the mood of the slot perfectly, part epic adventure and part creeping exotic mystique (think Queen of the Damned). I found it rather pleasant and had no inclination to shut the volume off. Each spin of the reels is accompanied by some dramatic overlays that sound a little like heavy stones being shifted. The combined package is immersive and entertaining.

Rise of Dead - Gameplay

Rise of Dead has three special features, which makes the slot a highly animated journey for the player. But are they features worth activating? Here’s what each one can do for your bank balance.

Rise of Dead Mummy Symbol 1

Mega Stacks

As this name implies, this randomly triggered feature involves stacked reels and can be initiated on any base game spin. When Mega Stacks kicks into gear, one reel will become fully stacked with a symbol also chosen at random. This is stacked 12 symbols high for considerably boosted wins.

Rise of Dead Wild Scarab symbol

Gift of Gods

This feature is activated when a full stack of the same symbol lands on reels 1, 3 and 5. You’ll definitely notice when it kicks off because the stacked reels stop spinning and take on a blue glow, while the remaining reels respin alone.

It’s called gift of the gods for a reason, because the top prize is 500 x your stake if you can fill the screen with the same symbol. Unfortunately triggering the feature doesn’t guarantee any wins, and more often then not it didn’t yield any results — which was anti-climactic to say the least.

Rise of Dead Scatter Symbol

Ancient Free Spins

This is the real king of the features in this slot, and it’s not a coincidence that it’s also the hardest one to trigger. To unlock the feature you’ll need to land 3 scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5. This isn’t easy, but once you succeed you’ll be able to set off 10 free spins. The feature can be retriggered if you land another 3 scatters, setting off a further 10 spins. This retriggering can happen over and over, which is why the slot is promoted with indefinite free spins, but don’t count on this being the case. That being said, you are likely to wind up with more than just the initital 10 spins because:

– Landing 1 Scatter symbol gets you 2 extra free spins

– Landing 2 Scatter symbols gets you 4 extra free spins

– Landing 3 Scatter symbols gets you 10 extra free spins

To reward players for even getting as far as activating the feature, all free spins will be helped along by some boosters like stacked symbols, including stacked wilds. The 3 Pharaohs can also expand to cover an entire reel. These extras give you the chance to achieve a full screen of Wilds, and that’s where the maximum payout of 5,000 x your bet is unlocked.

Rise of Dead - Payouts and Wagering Limits

Rise of Dead has a standard default RTP of 96.53% and can be played from between 0.20 and 100 per spin. These are fairly reasonable budgeting parameters, which would suit any type of player except mega high rollers who like placing scary 400 per spin bets.

In terms of symbol values, the Scarab wild is the highest paying symbol giving you 125x your stake for 5 on a payline. The Pharaohs come in second place, with 5 across a payline paying out at 25x your stake. The maximum win of 5,000x is only achievable in the Ancient Free Spins feature and, quite frankly, it’s entirely possible that you’ll go broke trying to get there. More attainable goals would be the nice prize of 500x, which is unlocked during the Gift of the Gods feature, and that isn’t super hard to activate.

Rise of Dead - Final Verdict

Final Verdict

Rise of Dead

You can’t play Rise of Dead without thinking of Book of Dead, and I’m sure Play’n GO was happy to maintain the link with the successful slot.

Despite offering three different special features, only one of them offers guaranteed value. The remaining two left me feeling rather cheated and unsatisfied. It’s easy to get swallowed into all the action though, because the slot is very well designed and fun to play. The frequent wins in the base game keep you spinning until you realize that they’re far too low to make up for your spend per spin.

If you can hit the Ancient Free Spins feature then you’re in for a nice reward, but quite honestly I didn’t have the budget or the staying power.
