Rise of Maya is a themed video slot from NetEnt. It runs with 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 paylines. The game has a changeable RTP that can increase up to 96.42% if the player chooses to engage a specific feature — but we’ll get into this more below.

While the theme itself isn’t that original, it does come with some fresh gameplay and multiple wilds. Not being a historian, I can’t tell you how faithfully this slot replicated Ancient Mayan culture, but I can tell you that the beautiful design does a lot to encourage curiosity in this lost civilization. But do the Mayan gods bring doom or delight? Let’s find out.

Rise of Maya - Theme and Background

It’s another Mayan revival (that’s Ancient Mexico for those who aren’t down with Central American history), but it could be the best looking one yet. Set deep in the jungle, the grid sits within a lost temple, a shrine to those ancient Mayan gods. I absolutely loved the music that accompanies this slot. It was immersive and completely devoid of any of those annoying, mechanical slot sound effects.

Even the usually boring A, K, Q, J, and 10 symbols have been designed up to fit in perfectly with the theme. Aside from these, the remaining symbols are a collection of painted stone carvings. These are made into the faces of gods worshipped by the ancient Mayans. The detail is incredible, and it’s obvious that a lot of thought and effort went into the visual aspect of this game.

Rise of Maya - Gameplay

Special features aren’t in short supply with this slot. These contribute heavily to the gameplay, as without these triggering things would get boring fast. Here’s how it all comes together:

Rise of Maya Wild

Rise of Maya has 3 different types of Wilds. These are:

  • Single Serpent Wilds (these behave as regular wilds, substituting for all symbols except the scatter)
  • Expanding Serpent Wilds (these can expand either up or down, but won’t always cover the entire reel)
  • Serpent Stacks (these only appear during the Free Spins game and will always cover the entire reel)
Rise of Maya Bonus Bet

Bonus Bet

This promises to increase your chances of activating free spins round. It can be switched on and off during the base game, but having it on will double your bet. Is it worth the extra cost? According to the game data, player chances of triggering the free spins without Bonus Bet switched on is 1 in 125 spins. If you choose to double your bet by switching Bonus Bet on, your chances are increased to 1 in 46 spins. It does this by increasing the chances of scatters and wilds landing. When these appear in view, the remaining reels that don’t hold a scatter or wild are re-spun.

When Bonus Bet is switched on, the game’s RTP increases from 96.12% to 96.42%. Usually I wouldn’t recommend that players go for a risky play such as this, but the free spins game in Rise of Maya is so rewarding, it might just be worth the investment.

Rise of Maya Scatter nudge

Scatter Nudge

This is a randomly activated feature both in the base game in the free spins game (more on this next). If a Wild or a Scatter almost makes it onto the screen, then the feature will trigger and nudge the symbol into view. Despite the Scatter Nudge helping to trigger the bonus game round, I found that it didn’t make much of an impact in practice.

Rise of Maya Free Spins

Free Spins

Instead of requiring only Scatters to trigger the bonus game, Rise of Maya also allows for Wilds to behave in the same way. Land any 3 or more of these symbols on the grid and the Free Spins game will get activated. This initially made me think the game would trigger more frequently, but it’s still pretty tough to get there.

Once you succeed in activating the feature, the reels that the wilds and scatters land on will become hot reels. This means that during the spins, Serpent Stacks will land on the hot reels with each spin. It’s a huge part of why the feature pays out so well, almost always making up for the money spent waiting to trigger it. Extra spins can also be collected during the feature, giving you more time to scoop up that cash.

Players will always start with 15 free spins. However, additional free spins are also up for grabs, raining the total to a potential of up to 24 free spins.

Rise of Maya - Payouts and Wagering Limits

Rise of Maya Red Mask symbol The slot is playable from C$0.10 to C$150 per spin. Unlike most slots, big wins aren’t reserved for the special features. Rise of Maya has its fair share of thrills in the base game. This largely comes down to the fact that players only need two high pay symbols to win a few coins, allowing you to stretch your budget and play for longer. While not the highest a player can hope for, the game’s symbols carry come decent value, making it possible to scoop up happy-making wins outside of the special features. Here’s what they’re worth:

  • Wild and Expanding Wild pays 250 x for 5 on a payline
  • Deer-horned feathered carving pays 250 x for 5 on a payline
  • Red carving pays 50 x for 5 on a payline
  • Brown carving pays 30 x for 5 on a payline
  • Green carving pays 20 x for 5 on a payline
  • Blue carving pays 15 x for 5 on a payline
  • All the royal symbols pay between 7.5 x and 3 x for 5 on a payline

Final Verdict

Rise of Maya

This is a game that’s going to appeal to a particular kind of player. Despite the decent range of betting options, the top prize isn’t going to pull in many high rollers. On the other hand, players who are drawn to the immersive style of slots might find the theme slightly too static. The fantastic design will hold your attention for a while, but it’s not NetEnt’s finest work.

A middle of the road player will enjoy this slot for its uncomplicated gameplay and fairly healthy wins, but I doubt many players will take the trouble to seek out these ancient gods a second time.
