Rising Royals is a video slot developed by Just For The Win Studios, exclusively for Microgaming. It’s designed to appeal to people’s undying fascination with history. In this case the focus is the French Renaissance, and it’s dripping in glamour and grandeur.

Such luxury and opulence does gives players the impression that a few spins on this slot might make them eligible for a shot at a similar pile of riches, but is this 5 reel 20 payline slot all that it promises? The 300 x max win suggests that this is unlikely to be the case, but let’s take a closer look.

Rising Royals - Theme and Background

The slot’s design is unquestionably lovely, and quite possibly the best thing about Rising Royals. Unfortunately, that doesn’t bode well for a slot because ultimately players will always choose money over style. But sticking to the subject of looks and theme, this Microgaming slot is offering players the opportunity to step back in time and into 18th century France.

The setting is the Palace of Versailles, where opulence and excess is the name of the game. There are no peasants here, it’s all about the nobility and getting a glimpse of their enviable lifestyle, packed with heavily brocaded dresses, powdered wigs and royal balls.

The palace in question sprawls across your screen and is eventually filled by a 5 x 3 grid that’s bedecked by glittering chandeliers. The symbols are made up of three well-dressed members of nobility; perhaps one is the Sun King himself, but this isn’t specified. The other male has a very distinctive hunch, and I did experience a flash of concern for his obviously compromised posture. The remaining character is a very attractive female, with blonde hair piled high and an aristocratic pout. These are joined by the Rising Royals game logo and a set of A, K, Q, and J symbols.

Rising Royals - Gameplay

As I’ve hinted up above, Rising Royals isn’t going to blow you away on the features front, which does make gameplay somewhat limited. The two existing features work in tandem and are triggered by each other. But let’s find out what action a player can expect, and whether the slot can prove naysayers wrong.

Rising Royals Symbol Lock

Symbol Lock

If you succeed in landing a combination of high pay symbols, these are locked in place and trigger a re-spin. If another high pay combination or more symbols from the first combo land, these will also get locked into place. This process repeats until no more qualifying symbols make an appearance, or if the reels are covered in locked symbols.

Rising Royals Chandelier Meter

Chandelier Meter Symbol Upgrade

Keep your eye on the chandelier meter to the side of the grid. This will light up every time a symbol gets locked in. This meter is divided into 3 sections and if you succeed in getting all 3 lit up, then the symbols that are locked get upgraded. This means that they transform into the symbol that’s the next highest on the pay table. This feature can be repeated, giving players the chance to upgrade symbols up to the most valuable.

While this sounds like a good opportunity for a decent payout, unfortunately it falls a little short. This is largely due to the lack of multipliers, which limits wins to just base game values.

Rising Royals - Payouts and Wagering Limits

According to the game data, players will hit a winning spin once in every 4 or 5 spins. That’s not the highest hit frequency I’ve experienced, but I guess it’s more important to figure out the value of each win, which could make up for those dry spins. Unfortunately things don’t get off to the best start because the grid symbols don’t carry very high values.

The A through to J symbols are the lowest in value, bringing in a range of 0.8 x to 3 x the stake. The three noble characters and the game logo symbol are the highest paying, but these only reach as high as 15 x your bet for five of a kind. The Rising Royals logo symbol which is the highest paying, offering 2, 4 or 15 times the bet for 3, 4 or 5 in combination. Bets can be placed between 0.10 and 250.00 per spin, which is a generous range and will suit all types of players. This is slightly odd when you consider that the 300 x maximum win is unlikely to attract big time players.

Final Verdict

Rising Royals

This slot is a bit of a missed opportunity, and many will consider it to be all style and no substance. Aside from its very limited ability to generate meaningful wins, it’s also slightly tedious. I’ve seen plenty of slots with basic gameplay that manage to retain excitement, but this isn’t one of them.

The game’s solitary special feature is perfectly acceptable in theory, but the lack of multipliers or bonus spins leave it feeling rather empty. The combination of a distinct lack of entertainment factor paired with its highly limited pay out potential is a quite a big problem. It leaves players with very little to gun for. I’ve put up with my fair share of dreary slots because the opportunity for a decent win was a constant draw. Unfortunately Rising Royals is unlikely to bring anyone a princely sum.
