Street Fighter 908 x 624

The entire gaming industry was given a first look at Street Fighter II at ICE 2020, and the reaction was unanimous. People were intrigued, excited and impressed by what NetEnt was bringing to the table. The slot is entirely based on Capcom’s iconic 1991 arcade video game. It’s played out on a 5×5 grid with features that are completely unique (and potentially highly confusing). Find out how to get your Hadouken on!

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior - Theme and Background

Let’s dial things all the way back to the 90s. A time when children and adults alike flocked to arcades to battle it out on well-worn machines standing on sticky floors. If you’re familiar with the original arcade game then you can skip over this section entirely. NetEnt has stayed exceptionally true to the original graphics, high pixelation included. The reels are occupied by the images of whichever two characters are in battle, plus A, K, Q, J symbols. The gameplay is a frenzied series of activity, with rather a large amount to keep track of as you spin and watch your character engage in a gritty street fight.

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior - Gameplay

In all my time reviewing slot games, it’s without a doubt that Street Fighter II was my biggest challenge. The gameplay is highly unorthodox. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, I’ll leave you to decide.

Street Fighter II Battles & Health Points

Battles and Health Points

Street Fighter II stays true to its origins, which means that it’s played out in a sequence of battles. The first thing players have to do is choose a character to fight a random opponent in the base game. Making this choice isn’t just a matter of aesthetics because each character has its own Victory and Defeat symbols, and your choice will even affect the game’s RTP a tiny bit. During the battle a health bar will determine how well you’re faring, and if that bar hits zero then you’ve lost the battle. Here’s what each character brings to the fight:

  • Dhalsim places 3 or 4 wilds in random positions on the grid (96.04% RTP)
  • Honda places 3 wild symbols on the same reel (96.05% RTP)
  • Ryu places 3 wild symbols on the same row (96.02% RTP)
  • Guile places 2 vertical stacks of 2 wild symbols (96.04% RTP)
  • Zangief places 2 horizontal stacks of 2 wild symbols (96.08% RTP)
  • Chun Li places 2 or 7 wild symbols at random (96.08% RTP)
  • Blanka places 1 or 5 wild symbols on the same reel (96.08% RTP)
  • Ken places 1 or 5 wild symbols on the same row (96.06% RTP)
Street Fighter II Wild Gauge

Wild Gauge

The Wild Gauge feature remains in place both during the base game and in the Free Spins (more on this below). In any battle, your character will have their very own Wild Gauge, which gets filled by any Wild Symbols that land as you spin. When you form winning combinations with character symbols (yours or your opponent), these will turn Wild and add to your Gauge. Any character symbol winning combination will turn all of its respective symbols into Wild ones and these will, in turn, fill up the Wild Gauge. Once the gauge has been filled to the top, you’ll unlock the ability to form a Wild Combo (see next).

Street Fighter II Wild Combo

Wild Combo

As explained above, a full Wild Gauge is how you trigger the Wild Combo. This means that you activate your character’s unique Wild Combo, placing Wild Symbols on the reels. The combo takes inspiration from the original characters’ signature moves.

Street Fighter II Car Smash Bonus Game

Car Smash Bonus Game

And losing doesn’t have to mean losing in Street Fighter II. If you don’t succeed in defeating your opponent during the battle, then you’ll activate the Car Smash Bonus Game. During this feature, destroying a car awards a random coin win. This game mode provides a nice rest period in between battles, adding another layer of personality to the gameplay. During this feature the screen changes to include a car, which is destined to a dreary fate. Your job is to dole out kicks and punches until the car is obliterated. The most exciting this is that during this feature you can actually control the fighter, moving him or her around and attacking. Once the car is nothing more than a sardine can you’ll receive a random win that ranges between 5x and 15x.

Street Fighter II Beat the Boss Free Spins

Beat the Boss Free Spins

Instead of the usual Scatter collection, players can activate the Free Spins feature in Street Fighter II by winning a battle. Beat the Boss Free Spins are played out with a win multiplier increasing at each level. Each level comes with a new boss to fight. If you succeed in defeating all 4 bosses, you become The World Warrior Champion and win an extra prize. There are 4 levels (each with their own boss and multiplier prize) laid out like this:

  • Level 1 pits you against Balrog on a 2x multiplier
  • Level 2 pits you against Vega on a 3x multiplier
  • Level 3 pits you against Sagat on a 5x multiplier
  • Level 4 pits you against M. Bison on a 10x multiplier

If you manage to bring down all 4 bosses then you’ve become the World Champion. At this point the Wild Gauge is filled for every Free Spin, with the chance of filling up additional Gauge levels for successive Wild Combos.

Street Fighter II Ryu

Insert Coin Gamble

Of course there’s no guarantee that you can beat all 4 bosses, and that’s where the gamble on top of the gamble comes in. Should you lose a battle you’ll be presented with 2 options:

  1. Walk away with the winnings you currently have
  2. Exchange a portion of your winnings to restart the last battle

Street Fighter II - Payouts and Wagering Limits

The hit frequency ranges depending on whether which characters you’re engaged with. The percentage parameters for payouts set by NetEnt are between 18.37% and 34.25%. This is just about the industry average. The thing I’d like to stress here is that this game comes with an unstable RTP. Firstly, it will change depending on which character you engage, this ranges from 96.02% up to 96.08%. On top of this, choosing to engage the gamble feature will see the RTP skyrocket to 98.7% all the way up to 100%. That doesn’t make it a sure thing, and it’s a dangerous feature which can also see you lose a very healthy portion of your winnings. Players can engage on a bet range from C$0.20 up to C$700, making it possible for any type of player to throw down in battle.

Final Verdict

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior

93%

Players who prefer slots that are simple and straightforward aren’t going to like this one. Street Fighter II is very busy, and for a good long while I had no idea what was happening to who or why. But you could also argue that the melee adds to the appeal, mimicking the inevitable ruckus of street fighting. Once I cleared away all the confusion I found myself very invested in the gameplay, more so than in most of the other slot games I’ve tried out. You get to make decisions, and even control your character’s movement during some features. The max prize hasn’t yet been revealed by NetEnt, but multipliers up to 10 x and the Gamble feature mean healthy winning are certainly on the table. Shoryuken!
