This isn’t the first time that Play’n GO have created a game based around the creative talents of obscure musical bands. This time they’ve chosen a Californian thrash metal band called Testament as their inspiration. The game comes with all the trappings of cliched metal features and a soundtrack that you’re either going to love or hate. I spun these highly volatile reels to find out if this is a slot worth rocking out to.

Testament - Theme and Background
Let’s start with the title. Testament is a Californian thrash metal band that has been around since the 1980s, and is right up there with the likes of Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. Regardless of whether or not death metal floats your boat, the game’s soundtrack of actual Testament tunes is a welcome change of pace from the usual mind-numbing slot music. Play’n GO designed the slot around all the band’s artwork and imagery, giving the team a break from brainstorming. You can expect a lot of skulls and serpents set within an eerie old hall that looks to be riddled with damp and unpleasantries.
The game’s Scatter symbol takes on the image of the their most famous album cover, Dark Roots of Earth. The remaining symbols are a combination of skulls, vampires, werewolves, skeletons, and shields. All really upbeat stuff. Completing the set are a range of Jack to Ace card values that have been artworked to fit the theme, but nothing that will blow your socks off. The skull is a particularly exciting symbol because it can transform into Wild at random on any landing spin. During the bonus game it’s guaranteed to transform (but more on this further below).
Testament - Gameplay
Your prize for playing this highly volatile game is a range of rewarding features. Testament is going hard with three different special features to keep up the tempo, and this is how they all work:
It’s difficult to describe the Scatter symbol, but you’ll recognize it as a horned, bearded man embedded in dead twigs (it looks better than it sounds). You’ll need 2 of this symbol to trigger this feature. Succeed and you’ll be rewarded with 3 free spins (I know, just 3) with one of the following features on top:
– Cold Embrace will cause any Wilds that land on the reels to turn sticky and remain in place for all free spins.
– Dark Roots of Earth will cause the skull Wild to spread up or down on the reel whenever it lands.
– Throne of Thorns will force the grid to expand from 5×3 to 4-5-6-5-4. This means increased paylines of up to nearly ten times the base level, giving you up to 2,400 ways to win.
Rise Up Spins
This is the second free spins game of the slot and it’s triggered by the same Scatter symbol as the previous game. You’ll need more of the creepy twig man symbol to get to these spins though. 3 to 5 Scatters will launch the game with the possibility of multipliers.
3 Scatters is just 9 Free Spins with no multiplier, but 4 or 5 Scatters will give you 9 Free Spins with a 4 x or 20 x multiplier respectively. To add to the excitement, the reels will also expand to 4-5-6-5-4, with nine spaces at the top of the grid blocked off with stone blockers.
Each time a Scatter lands on the reels, it will smash through a stone blocker, expanding the reel by one space. If you obliterate all nine stone blockers (don’t worry – this isn’t hard to do) you’ll activate the game’s final feature immediately after – Testament Spins.
When triggered, this feature will tack on an extra 3 Free Spins. They’re a pretty powerful last push at big wins because the feature activates all three of the Song Features simultaneously (Cold Embrace, Dark Roots and Throne of Thorns). That means Wilds will become sticky and spread up and down across the expanded grid.
Testament - Payouts and Wagering Limits
The slot does a lot of things right for players who like to customize their wagers. The bet bar can start as low as just C$0.10 per spin, but those with a ‘go big or go home’ attitude can have a go at the exciting 20,000 x prize at C$100 per spin. That means an outrageous opportunity to take home C$2,000,000.
But how likely is this prize? The very high volatility ranking (that’s the highest offered by Play’n GO) and the RTP of 96.20% means that most players won’t have the bank power to drive anything remotely close to that value home. But luckily there’s a lot of room for lower (yet still considerable) cash prizes.
The skull is the most valuable basic symbol, and a line of 5 is worth 12.5 times the stake. The Wild carries a slightly higher value of 15 x for 5 on a winning payline. Those aren’t very big numbers but the wins will come in much heavier during the special features. Get to the Testament Spins for a chance at those really top shelf prizes, but with only 3 goes a pop, you’ll need to hit lucky pretty quickly.
Testament - Final Verdict
This slot isn’t going to float everyone’s boat. In normal life only a small percentage of people can stand this genre of music for an extended period of time. Of course, players are likely to make an exception for this slot, largely due to the fact that they’re playing for prizes up to 20,000 times the stake, and the fact that they can mute the sound. Naturally, such rewards are paired with dangerous territory, and I think smaller budget players should think hard before giving this one a go. That said, the hardcore gameplay is very befitting of the thrash metal theme.
