The Sword and the Grail - Theme and Background
In this version of the classic legend, Lancelot is on a quest to recover the mythical holy grail for the mighty King Arthur. I suppose once Excalibur had been safely extracted from stone, the very capable Knights needed to unearth other artifacts to keep themselves entertained.
Familiar characters join Arthur and Lancelot on the hunt, including the wise old Merlin, and the fair Lady Guinevere. The grid is laden with all the medieval trappings you would expect. In fact, the backdrop is an ancient castle hall, a location one can only assume is the fabled Camelot.
Keeping Lancelot, Merlin and Guinevere company across the reels is Excalibur (acting as a scatter and 3 of which trigger the slot’s only feature), the Holy Grail (standing in as Wild), Shields, and a set of low value Royals (Ace, King, Queen, Jack). The reels spin to some very epic music, which was quite pleasant to the ear and I allowed it to play on at low volume. At the top of the grid is Excalibur, marked with a series of multipliers from 2 x to a mighty 100 x. There’s little animation, but this is a good thing because the well designed graphics are so detailed that any further stimulation would likely cause some sensory overload.
The Sword and the Grail - Gameplay
Players who enjoy feature packed slots are likely to feel let down, because The Sword and The Grail only has a single Free Spins feature built in. But don’t write the game off just yet, because the feature is diverse enough to surprise you in more ways than one.
The slot uses the Holy Grail as its wild, but it goes a little further than the usual run of the mill wild. It stands in for all symbols except the Excalibur one, helping players to make fairly frequent winning combinations. However it can also serve as a 2 x multiplier, which can increase to 5x, 10x and a very fabulous 100x (although don’t count on this one appearing very often). It will even pay you directly, offering up to 50x your bet, if you rack up five symbols on a winning payline.
This is the only real feature, and it’s where players have the opportunity to really take home the big cheese. Three Excalibur swords are needed to trigger 5 free spins, but extra spins and higher multipliers can be collected throughout feature across 4 levels.
To progress to the next level, you’ll need to land even more Excalibur symbols on the reels. Each level awards a higher rank, starting at Squire and ending as the King of the Knights. For each progression players are awarded a further 5 spins and an increased multiplier, beginning with just 2 x, then 5 x, 10 x and finally a maximum value of 100 x at level 4. Reaching the top multiplier will also set you up for the highest possible prize of 10,000 x your stake. Here’s the exact breakdown of what’s awarded:
- Level 1 runs with a 2 x multiplier wild
- Level 2 is triggered if you collect 6 more Excalibur scatters, where you’ll receive 5 extra free spins and a 5 x multiplier wild
- Level 3 is unlocked with a further 5 Excalibur scatters, giving you 5 extra free spins and a 10 x multiplier wild
- Level 4 is achieved with 7 more scatters, for the final round of 5 extra free spins and a multiplier set to 100 x
The Sword and the Grail - Payouts and Wagering Limits
The Sword and the Grail slot runs on 20 fixed pay lines across 5 reels. Unlike with many slots it’s easy to see where a player might achieve the maximum win of 10,000x because the free spins feature has a 100x multiplier built in to its uppermost level.
But if you’re not shooting for the stars, there are plenty other places where medium to high wins can be achieved. Landing 5 of a kind of the Wild (the Grail symbol) will earn you 50x your bet. King Arthur is next best at 25x, Guinevere holding a respectable 12.5x, and Lancelot and Merlin each representing 7.5x. The Grail Wild can also boost your win with increasing multipliers outside of the free spins feature, with opportunities rangin from 2x, 5x, 10x and a fairly elusive 100x.
The Sword and the Grail - Final Verdict
The Sword And The Grail
After investing about an hour playing this slot I was left in no uncertain doubt that it’s designed for players with a penchant for high risk, high reward. That means it might be dangerous territory for small budget players looking for a few small wins.
Sitting firmly at 10 out 10 volatility, players will experience lots of dry spins and a tough to trigger special feature. That being said, hitting the main event will be worth the wait, with multiple levels offering up to 100x, so there’s a lot to hang around for. At default the slot offers a very fair RTP of 96.42%, but this may decrease with some providers, so be sure to check. Players are in for a wild ride, but be sure you’re worthy before laying a single finger on Excalibur.
