If someone offered me the luxury of 3 magical wishes, I very much doubt they would involve Wilds and Multipliers. But we’re in the world of slots here, and those kinds of features are the equivalent of gold out in the real world.

The Wish Master from NetEnt is based on the very popular legend of the genie in the lamp, offering players the tantalizing opportunity to walk away with pocketfuls of forbidden riches — or at least a tidy little withdraw-able profit. Set across 5 reels and 20 paylines, players will be spinning to high volatility and, unfortunately, very sparse special features. But let’s find out if this genie can still make our wishes come true.

  • Simple and straightforward gameplay
  • Wilds and Multipliers layer up for boosted wins
  • The slot allows for 3 special features to run simultaneously
  • There’s only one special feature
  • There are no Free Spins
  • It’s too difficult to land three Scatters for triple wishes

The Wish Master - Theme and Background

The Wish Master is essentially all about a magical lamp and genie that grants wishes. Sounds familiar? Well, rather than the big, blue lovable genie from Aladdin, NetEnt has created a fearsome creature that looks remarkably like every cartoon representation of Death; the only thing missing is a scythe. Aside from the exciting moments that you land the magical lamp Scatter on the reels (more on this below), there’s not much going on during the slot, so that after a few spins it soon becomes repetitive. Set within a cave and spinning to the sounds of vaguely Arabian music, the designers didn’t stretch their imagination too far with this one.

Across the reels are A, K, Q, and J Royals, which take up almost all the grid spaces on most spins. The rest of the symbols are a bejeweled cat, hawk and cobra. There is also a flaming Wild symbol on the black cloud background, and finally, the already mentioned genie lamp Scatter. Considering the wealth of options available, I would have hoped for a more vibrant collection of symbols.

The Wish Master - Gameplay

The Wish Master will immediately put many slot players off because of its distinct lack of bonus features. Not only are these in short supply, but they also completely bypass the usually very popular free spins. This may be bad news for some, but it does make my job easier in terms of trying to describe the features. Here’s what this slot has to offer.

The Wish Master Genie Symbol

Genie Bonuses

If you land 1 Scatter symbol (that’s the scroll with the picture of a genie lamp printed on it) then you’ll benefit from 1 of the 5 randomly chosen bonus features. What’s good about this is that only 1 symbol is necessary to trigger the feature, what’s bad is that even once you trigger it, you’ll still be using your own spend per spin. Many reviews have mistakenly flagged this feature as a free spins bonus, but that’s not the case. The genie will grant 1 of 5 random features, guaranteed to apply to the next 10 spins, but you’ll still need to pay for each spin. Landing further scatters will grant you additional random wishes simultaneously, with the slot allowing for a maximum of 3 simultaneous wishes. Here’s what’s on offer:

  • The Multiplier wish awards either a 2 x or 3 x multiplier, or you can get both multipliers, which will make it 6 x in total.
  • The Expanding Wild wish will turn every landing Wild into an expanding wild, filling the entire reel.
  • The Extra Wild wish will place an extra mask wild on the reels that turns corresponding symbols into wilds.
  • The Wild Reel wish gives you get an entire reel entirely populated by wilds.
  • The Random Wild wish will award 2 floating wilds in different places on the reels.

If during the 10 spins you hit another scatter, 1 more feature will be activated, and the bonuses will last for 5 more spins. You can have up to 3 features active at a time.

The Wish Master - Payouts and Wagering Limits

The majority of the base game wins pay out between 25% and 50% your bet spend, so you really depend on the special features to rake back your money. The Wish Master is all decked out with the usual uninspired A, K, Q, and J symbols which carry the lowest value. These are joined by 4 gold, bejeweled animal carvings, as well as the scatter and wild symbols.

The highest paying is the cobra, which could net you 750 x your bet if you get 5 of these on a winning payline. In case you didn’t notice, therein lies the game’s top win. It’s unusual for this to be available in the base game, but it does make it one of the most attainable max wins out there. The Scatter is equally, if not more, important because it’s the key to triggering the random wish feature where your wins are significantly boosted, if not guaranteed. Players can place their bets anywhere between 1 and 10 coins per payline, with a coin value that ranges from 0.01 to 0.50. It’s not the most flexible range out there, but it still meets most player needs.

The Wish Master - Final Verdict

Final Verdict

The Wish Master

Players who enjoy varied special features will quickly become bored by the The Wish Master. The Scatter animation is impressive, but it’s also unvaried and swiftly starts to get old. The symbols are lacking in inspiration and the theme is a little wishy washy. On the positive side, the only real special feature available is easy to trigger and it does pay out often. Wins in the base game are low unless you land several cobra symbols, and that won’t happen often — if at all.

Overall the slot is capable of generating a profit, but it’s not going to get you that beach house in Malibu. It’s good for a few spins if you’re mixing it up with other slots, but unfortunately the wishes didn’t really wash this time.
