Thor: Hammer Time - Theme and Background

In NoLimit City’s slot, Thor hasn’t taken on much Chris Hemsworth appeal. Instead the developer’s characterization is a probably far more realistic, heavily bearded stocky man wielding a hammer and a snarl. As you would expect, the music is highly cinematic and, although a little repetitive, was enjoyable enough that I allowed it as low level background noise.

Each reel stops rolling with a satisfying thud, echoing the sound of Thor’s hammer as it hones in on its target. The reels are set into a background of a battleground within a rolling forest, but my favorite thing about the design are the symbols themselves. Not a single Royal or card suit in sight, each one is entirely entrenched in the theme, from mysterious runes, to glowing orbs. The most valuable symbols are represented by armory, cups and rings, while the runes stand in as low paying symbols. These are completed by a Wild set in gold, the orb Scatter and Thor himself who only appears on reel 5.

In Norse legend, as well as in the Marvel comics, Thor is an all-powerful force against evil. Therefore it stands to reason that he should come equipped with a heavy artillery. This slot is no exception, giving players the opportunity to access 5 different special features.

Thor’s Lightning Bonus

This excellent feature won’t be easy to activate because it’s triggered by the special bonus symbol of Thor and his Hammer, which only appears on reel 5. If you’re lucky enough to land it, then you’ll be able to unlock 1 out of 3 of Thor’s features:

Once a feature has been assigned, the repsins will begin. The feature remains active so long as the Thor symbol remains on the reels. He’ll be nudged down one space with each spin, awarding a single respin as he moves along.

Rune Raze

As a randomly triggered feature, all you can do is sit through base game spins and wait for it to happen. When it is triggered, all runes on the grid (these are the small etched symbols) will be transformed into a singe specific rune symbol, giving you a big chance at multiple winning combinations.

Hammer Time

This is the second randomly triggered feature of the slot. When activated, all high paying symbols (those being the Ring, Goblet, Axe and Helmet) will transform into the top paying Hammer symbol.

Scatter Energy Collect

Landing 2 or more Scatters (the pinkish purple orbs) will trigger this feature. As long as there are Scatters on the reel, the Scatters will nudge down one step and respin all remaining reels without Scatters. Asgard Spins (see next) can be activated through this feature once you collect the energy from all 3 Scatters. Any additional Scatters you land will give you 2 extra spins.

Asgard Spins

You’ll be awarded 12 Free Spins when you land all 3 Scatters. That’s why this feature is often most easily triggered through the Scatter energy Collect feature. Thor’s Lightning Bonus will also activate more frequently on reel 5 here, awarding 2 extra spins along with multiplier, random sticky wild or sticky wild reels. Thor will award an additional feature for each nudge, stacking up multiple features for as long as he remains visible on the reels.

In this slot, Wilds are less valuable than usual as they can substitute for all symbols, yet not the Scatter and the Bonus. Because two symbols are excluded, they make less winning combinations than you normally get. The rest of the symbols vary in value, here’s the hierarchy (starting from the lowest):

At the top end of the scale, the Hammer symbol is the one that pays the most, offering 15 x your bet for five of a kind. Unfortunately base game pay outs are lower than average, and this is probably due to the fact that the game developers had to balance out the fact that the slot has 5 different special features.

Is it worth it? I guess that depends on how much you prize entertainment value. That being said, if you can make 5 symbol combinations, you can expect a very happy pay out (as listed above). You can try your luck for the slot’s maximum win of 2,328 x your bet during the Asgard Spins. This is more attainable that most max wins because the special features can be triggered simultaneously.

This slot promises a lot, boasting 5 different special features and a decent top prize. In practice it’s slightly less lucrative than you might expect, with a couple of the features being rather tricky to activate and several dry spins to contend with.

Keeping these points in mind, I still felt that the pros outweighed the cons, and the payouts from the features made up for the empty spins. The varied features also kept things highly entertaining, and I would recommend the slot to anyone who appreciates a Medium volatility buzz and good old Norse God theme.
