Aliens, farm animals, abductions, conspiracy theories — smells like the Midwest to me. And indeed that is the inspiration behind Nolimit City’s Tractor Beam slot, which comes in at a shade over Medium volatility and a somewhat unimpressive RTP of 96.01%.

On the flip side the game is touting a maximum win of 3,403 x your bet. But we all know the only way to really judge the quality of a slot is to get in on the action, and that’s just what I did. So without further delay let’s plough through Tractor Beam’s specs, and see what exactly is making these farm animals so nervous.

  • The game design is fantastic
  • Two of the features are triggered randomly but fairly frequently
  • The symbols carry above average payout values
  • Tractor Beam is available to players in Canada.
  • The RTP is lower than you get with most slots
  • The free spins feature is incredibly difficult to trigger
  • There are no multipliers in play to help boost wins

Tractor Beam - Theme and Background

Tractor Beam Wild Symbol You know how every time you watch a movie about aliens it involves some small hick town in some forgotten corner of America? Well this slot is playing out on a farm in a very such town, where ‘beware alien’ signs are actually in production, and crop circles are as common as hay in a barnyard.

Tractor Beam is very well designed, if you can appreciate cartoon graphics designed with a sense of humor. The reels are littered with various pudgy farm animals (cow, sheep, chicken and pig), each looking more terrified than the other.

They rest of the symbols are the A, K, Q, J, 10 Royals, designed nicely as letters painted on some old bits of fencing. The set is completed by the Wild (a road sign depicting an alien warning) and the Scatter (a glowing pink letter ’S’). The music is exactly what you’d expect. And by that the I mean the exact same eerie, wavering music we’ve come to associate with foreign green creatures and the The X-Files. I thought the theme was very well put together, entertaining and well crafted.

Tractor Beam - Gameplay

Outside of the base game, there are 3 main features to help boost your wins. It took me a while to figure out what was happening and why, so let me break it down for you and help you save on those precious minutes of utter bewilderment.

Tractor Beam Beam Em Up Symbol

Beam 'Em Up

This feature is triggered at random so you’ll have no control over when those bright rays of light will descend across the reels. But when the aliens do decide to make their move, all non-organic (low value) symbols will be beamed off the reels and up to the mothership — so I guess these visitors are vegetarian.

After that, the grid will be populated solely by the farm animals, and any wilds or scatters from your last spin. This means your chances and considerably boosted on your next spin, so fingers crossed for that big payout because it’s one of the few chances you’ll have to trigger a large win outside of the free spins (more on this below).

Tractor Beam Pig Symbol

Clone Attack!

This second feature that’s also randomly triggered kind of works in the reverse. This time the mothership is beaming things back onto the reels. A farm animal will be chosen at random and sent back onto the grid in stacks, filling entire reels with a matching symbol. This will happen with at least 1 reel, but it could also happen across 2, 3 or 4 reels.

Hitting maximum cloning during this feature could be absolutely massive in terms of payout potential. However, it’s worth noting that during my 200 or so spins, I triggered this feature about 4 times. On each occasion it failed to pay out at all, which was incredibly underwhelming.

Tractor Beam Scatter Symbol

Abduction Spins

Land 3 Scatters (the glowing S symbol) and you’ll successfully unlock the free spins feature. Be warned that this won’t be easy and I was spinning for good long time before I got there. You’ll kick things off with either 7, 9 or 12 Free Spins depending on whether you land 3, 4 or 5 Scatters. These will play out on an amended grid that has all winning symbols removed, leaving you with just sticky Wilds.

Each time you land a Scatter you’ll be rewarded with an additional free spin. As soon as symbols form winning lines, they’re removed from the grid, allowing room for more Wilds to stick. The feature’s best result is a screen full of Wilds, which will achieve the slot’s top prize.

Tractor Beam - Payouts and Wagering Limits

Don’t be fooled but the cute, chubby little animals, this slot packs some serious bite and you’ll need some proper grit to see things through to the other side. Wins get awarded for 3 to 5 matching symbols and only from left to right.

In terms of payouts, this slot’s symbols are more valuable than most. Each of the card suits award 6 x your bet for 5 of a kind. The farm animals offer a range from 7.5 x all the way up to 15 x your bet for 5 on a winning payline. The alien warning sign Wild substitutes for all regular pay symbols and will also give you 15 x your bet for a winning set of 5.

Final Verdict

Tractor Beam

I was initially so very excited by Tractor Beam. I thought the theme was smart and funny, with humorous graphics and some fun animation. The low key soundtrack was also a nice break from the usual mania.

However, there are a couple things I feel obliged to flag here. First off, don’t let the childish cartoon designs lull you into a false sense of security. If you don’t watch it, the only thing getting abducted will be your bank balance. Secondly, two out of three special features are triggered at random, and it’s possible that they won’t result in a payout at all. This is a little crushing when you’re expecting to finally make some money back on your bet spend.

The real wins are to be had in the Abduction Spins, but you may be holding your breath till you’re blue in the face by the time that feature rolls around.
