You wouldn’t know it from the title, but this slot is running with a Chinese theme. At first I wasn’t sure where brides came into the equation, but then I figured the theme is probably centered on Chinese wedding culture that went right over my head. What I was immediately clear on was the 3,000 x your bet top prize that comes coupled with high volatility and just 9 paylines. Wins are boosted by sticky wilds and a free spins game, but is it enough to coax you into this trip down the aisle? Read on to learn how this slot works.

Who's The Bride - Theme and Background

As you would expect with a Chinese themed slot, the color red dominates the scene. This deep hue is coupled with a lot of gold gilding and a series of elaborate symbols. These are made up of several cartoon style graphics including tea pots, fans, slippers, ornate chests, pagodas and lanterns. Each of these items are taken from Chinese wedding customs, which fits in with the slot’s strange name. Despite the Asian bridal theme, the idea doesn’t really extend beyond the symbolic graphics, making the entire concept seem rather stunted and pointless. A series of card symbols including A, K, Q, J, and 10 also make an appearance on the reels. These have been manipulated slightly to look like Chinese characters — not a particularly original idea.

The bride herself does make an appearance, her face veiled behind a red curtain. She’s also the slot’s Wild symbol, and can substitute for all other symbols except the Scatter.

Who's The Bride - Gameplay

It was a little disappointing to discover that Who’s The Bride only comes with one special feature. The disappointment is further compounded by the fact that the slot’s high volatility status means that this single feature won’t be triggered particularly often. But when you do eventually activate it, here’s how it works.

Who's The Bride Scatter Symbol

Free Spins

In order to get your hands on the free game, you’ll need to land 3, 4 or 5 Scatter symbols. These are represented by a golden ingot. Aside from giving the player 12 free spins, the winning Scatter combination also comes with a tidy little payout. Depending on how many golden ingots land, players will be awarded 4, 25 or 2,500 times the total stake.

Who's the Bride Sticky Wild

Sticky WIlds

During the bonus game, players will perform best if they land the bride symbol. These are Sticky Wilds, which means they’ll remain locked in place for the duration of the free spins, increasing your chances of making winning combinations. On top of this, if you succeed in landing a Sticky Wild bride on each reel then you’ll win yourself and additional 5 free spins. At the end of the feature, which can only offer you the maximum potential of 17 free spins, your total winnings are set to a 2 x multiplier. This is a less common attribute, and the promise of doubling your prize money is sure to lure in a fair few fortune seekers.

Who's The Bride - Payouts and Wagering Limits

My favorite thing about Who’s The Bride is the fact that the symbols carry values much higher than your average slot. This means that despite the lack of multiple special features, base game payouts are high enough to kind of make up for this. Here’s what the game’s top paying symbols are worth:

  • Gold ingot (Scatter) pays 2,500 x for 5 on a payline
  • Bride (Wild) pays over 1,500 x for 5 on a payline
  • Pagoda pays 1,000 x for 5 on a payline
  • Wedding chest pays 750 x for 5 on a payline
  • Slipper pays 400 x for 5 on a payline
  • Talisman pays 300 x for 5 on a payline
  • Pitcher pays 200 x for 5 on a payline

The bride (who’s face is partially concealed by a red curtain) is the wild symbol – as well as substituting for all symbols bar the scatter, 5 in combination will pay out up to 166.66 times stake during the base game, and up to 3,000 times the stake during the Free Spins bonus game. This is where you can unlock the slot’s biggest prize. The Scatter symbol, aptly represented by a gold ingot also comes with a dual benefit. It offers players the second biggest payday because, as mentioned above, if you land 5 of them a prize of up to 2,500x your stake will drop straight into your piggybank. However, if you land at least 3 Scatters then you will also trigger 12 Free Spins (described above).

Final Verdict

Who’s The Bride

The colors, graphics and music on Who’s The Bride seem similar to hundreds of other slots, but if we’re looking at Who’s the Bride slot from a pure money-making perspective, then it’s actually one of the better ones out there. This is largely thanks to its high value symbols and 2 x multiplier free spins game. That said, I found the gameplay a little contradictory.

NetEnt is obviously trying to lure players in with their 3,000 x top prize, but then fails to offer the bet range to match. With a maximum bet of C$18, it’s unlikely that any really serious players will engage with the slot. On the other end of the scale, lots of dry spins make it a tricky slot for small budget players. It seems to me that Who’s The Bride has unwittingly managed to find itself somewhere in the middle, and won’t attract the volume of players it was after.
