Wild Rails - Theme and Background
This isn’t your average commuter train. Play’n GO has gone all out to take players back in time, to an era where luxury and opulence were commonplace among the upper classes. In fact, our 4 main characters are decked out in the utmost finery, clearly living the good life.
These upper class cabins chug down reels which move horizontally, giving the effect of four stacked trains zipping between mountains. The four characters (2 male and 2 female) haven’t been given names, but I imagine they would be something suitably 1820s like Arabella and Rupert. Each of the characters grasps something in their hand; a fan, champagne flute, first class tickets and an eye glass. The rest of the symbols are made up of a golden locomotive, which stands in as the Scatter, and a big letter ‘W’ repping for the Wilds (although these are only seen when the Wild Trains roll around – more on this later).
The remaining symbols are nicely designed up A, K, Q, J, and 10. The music is perfectly Regency, like the opening credit music of a movie adapted from a Jane Austen novel. It’s actually quite pleasant. As you spin the reels, the music is overlaid by the sounds of the trains moving swiftly over the tracks.
Wild Rails - Gameplay
With 2 main special features, Wild Rails has the potential to be a very busy slot. But not all special features activate at the same frequency, and that’s something made blatantly obvious with this slot. Here’s what to expect.
This feature is triggered randomly on any spin, even during the other special feature. It consists of a transformed reel carrying up to 5 Wilds and other symbols. Theoretically the Wild Train can bring a reel entirely made up of Wilds, but this won’t happen often.
What does happen more frequently is that multiple Wild Trains hit the reels on a single spin. This can even go up to all 4 reels, but I only managed as many as 3. It was still a good result, and the payout was pretty sweet. Each wild will substitute for any symbol except the Scatter. Technically, a full screen of wilds is possible for a mega win, but you might wind up in the poor house waiting for that one to happen.
Ticket to Free Spins
It was upwards of 320 spins before I finally triggered this feature, although I can’t say that this will necessarily be every player’s experience. Slots are notoriously kind to one person and cruel to another. 3 or more Scatters will activate the feature, but when I finally succeeded I was disappointed to say the least. My reward was just 5 Free Spins. This is because 3, 4, or 5 Scatters will trigger 5, 7 or 10 Free Spins respectively. But it was hard enough to land 3 Scatters, let alone 5.
During your Free Spins, a Wild Train will arrive on every spin, which pretty much ensures a pay out per spin. If you collect 3 scatters during the free spins you’ll be rewarded with an additional Wild Train plus another spin. If you activate 4 Wild Trains during the feature, landing a further 3 scatters will give you an addition 3 free spins. It’s worth mentioning that the Scatter turns Wild during the free spins, which further increases your chances of a pay day. My win from the feature was decent, and I collected enough Scatters during the spins to win myself an additional 2 spins. But overall I would still label the feature underwhelming when you consider the difficulty of activating it.
Wild Rails - Payouts and Wagering Limits
The slot is played over 5 reels, with 5 symbols each, across 30 active paylines. It’s a high volatility game, but the trade off is a maximum win of up to 5,000 x your total bet. This can be unlocked during the Free Spins feature, but considering how long it takes to get there, I wouldn’t bank on many players walking away with the top prize.
Bets can be placed between 0.30 and 90.00, which lands the bet line somewhere between 0.01 and 3.00. The top paying symbols are the Wilds, which pay out at 30 x for 5 of a kind. The woman in purple follows at 20 x, the woman in red at 15 x, the gentleman in green carries 10 x, and finally, the other man in blue awards up to 5 x your bet for a maxed out payline. The remaining symbols are the Royals, which carry typically low values that certainly won’t help you take any money home.
Wild Rails - Final Verdict
The slot is beautiful and a joy to watch. So from that perspective alone, it’s got to receive top marks. Out of the two special features, only one was actually worth the wait. The Wild Train rolled around in singles or multiples whenever it felt like it, so that could be slightly frustrating to some players. The Free Spins are far too challenging to trigger, with Scatters that land so infrequently they may as well not be a part of the slot. Does this matter? Not hugely, because players can access decent wins from the Wild Trains alone. I would recommend this slot on the basis that it offers the opportunity for a decent profit set against a lovely vista.
