It seems that Microgaming has taken to employing the use of third-party design studios across all their new games. Wonder Woods is another of these, hitting our screen thanks to the efforts of Just For The Win Studios. It’s a colorful slot, with 5 reels and 20 paylines, but it doesn’t pack much punch, offering a maximum prize of just 400 x your bet.

If you’re interested in taking a tour through this magical forest then you can don your hiking boots starting at as little as C$0.10 per spin. But any great adventure requires some preparation, so we suggest your read this review first.

Wonder Woods - Theme and Background

The idea for this slot design is a magical forest that’s where mystery lurks behind every leaf, a theme that’s common enough in the slot world. The background is the forest itself, all climbing ivy and sparkling vegetation. The cheerful vista is complemented by background music that’s fun and upbeat.

However, oddly enough, the icons on the grid seem to have absolutely nothing to do with this imagery. The low value symbols are the usual K, Q, J, and 10 symbols. The high paying symbols, which are usually where the theme ties in, are instead a collection of fruit symbols (oranges, cherries and grapes). There’s also a Free Spins logo that triggers the bonus game, and a Mystery symbol that’s represented by a golden question mark. It’s all a little odd if you ask me. Why bother with a magical forest theme in the first place if you aren’t going to follow through properly? Perhaps the designers already had the icons on file and it was a bit of a rush job. Whatever the reason, it definitely tarnishes the overall effect of the theme.

Wonder Woods - Gameplay

Even though it initially appears that there are four game features, in reality it’s just two. That’s because two of the features only trigger within the free spins game. Here’s how it all works:

Wonder Woods Mystery Symbol

Mystery Symbols

These symbols are represented by a golden question mark and they form part of the standard suite of game icons. They can land on any spin, both in and out of the base game. Once they land (and they can land in any number) they will all turn into an identical symbol, which is chosen at random.

Any symbol is possible except for Free Spin Scatter symbol and the Wild. This feature is responsible for the majority of the wins, as well as any visual excitement.

Wonder Woods Free Spins

Free Spins

The Scatter in this slot is unmistakeable as it comes plastered with the words ‘Free Spins’. Land 3, 4 or 5 of this guy anywhere on the reels within the same spin and you’ll trigger the Free Spins feature. Players will be rewarded with 8, 10 or 12 free spins respectively.

The top game works differently from the base game. As your spins begin, any mystery symbol that lands during the free spins turns sticky and will lock in position for the remainder of the feature. These mystery symbols will also all turn into the same symbol on each free spin. And if you manage to fill a whole reel with sticky mystery symbols, it will morph into a stacked wild. This will lock into position for any free spins you have left.

Wonder Woods - Payouts and Wagering Limits

Wonder Woods Wild The game has a decent RTP of 96.03%, which is just a hint over the average. Wonder Woods runs with a hit frequency of 22%, which translates into a player win about 1 in every 4.45 spins. The gameplay is very simple and you only have to pick the total bet for the round, without worrying about covering multiple bet lines. The betting range available starts at C$0.10 and climbs up to C$100, which will give most players the ability to pick a bet size they’re comfortable with.

Wonder Woods has a volatility level that’s set to Medium, this wouldn’t be such an issue if the top payout wasn’t capped at 400 x. But it definitely is, and this combination could prove to be a deal breaker for some.

The Mystery Symbols are fairly effective at generating base game wins, which is good news for those who can’t afford to wait out the Free Spins Bonus game. It’s a shame that Sticky and Stacked Mystery Symbols are hidden behind the Free Spins, perhaps players would have forgiven the low maximum win if these could be accessed throughout the gameplay.

Final Verdict

Wonder Woods

Microgaming and Just For The Win have kept things simple in Wonder Woods, but perhaps they took the simplicity slightly too far. Sadly, the theme falls flat, with no integration between the background design and the symbols themselves.

For players who don’t care about looks, the gameplay is decent, thanks to the Mystery Symbols keep that keep things interesting. The real action is hidden behind the free games, but these won’t trigger all that often — and when they do payouts won’t be astronomical. At a maximum of 400 x, many players will walk away from this game in favor of one with better specs. But if you like to keep things low risk, Wonder Woods remains a decent option (so long as you don’t mind Medium volatility). Unfortunately this enchanted forest was missing a little magic for my liking.
