Fans of the macabre will appreciate the theme of this slot from Kalamba Games. From the get go you’ll realize that the designer’s aim was to entertain, with a very busy grid and lot’s going on. If the intention was to keep players spinning as long as possible, they certainly succeeded. The slot runs with 6 reels and 50 paylines, offering many opportunities for payouts. But does this Medium to High volatility slot deliver? I tried it out across its full range of bet levels to find out if this is a slot worth raising the dead for.
- Multiple features keep the slot entertaining
- Creepy and fun theme
- The slot’s RTP can be increased up to 97.70%
- Zombie Queen is available to players in Canada
- The Skull Bonus Game takes an exceptionally long time to trigger
- Very low wins in the base game even if you engage Hyper Bet
- The slot is probably unsuitable for small budget players

Zombie Queen - Theme and Background
When the subject matter is zombies, it’s a pretty safe bet that graveyards and rotting flesh will abound. And Kalamba Games doesn’t disappoint in this aspect, setting the slot in a burial ground in the middle of night, with bare trees, fog rolling across the ground and decrepit limbs bursting through the damp soil. The soundtrack is ominous, designed to send chills up your spin. I must say that the effect was slightly marred by the cheerful sound of the spinning reels each time you land winning combinations. The grid even has little tiny bugs that crawl up the sides every now and then.
The symbols across the reels are designed to be creepy and dark, tying in with the theme of death and decay. You’ll find a red gem gripped by a skeletal hand, a ring inset with teeth in glowing emerald, a heavy looking blue necklace, and a red brooch whose gem is encased by a bony ribcage. The A, K, Q, J, 10, and 9 symbols are all carved into tombstones, so despite the lack or originality, they still blend really well with the theme. The remaining symbols are a Wild, the fiery skull bonus Scatter, a brain suspended in green liquid which is collected on the right side of the grid, and, last but not least, the Zombie Queen herself who acts as a walking Multiplier Wild.
Zombie Queen - Gameplay
In terms of special features, Zombie Queen’s gameplay gives you a little bit of everything. From amped up Wilds to free spins and bonus games, there’s a lot going for it from an entertainment aspect. But do the features translate into decent payouts? Here’s how it all goes down.
If you usually place bigger bets anyway then the Hyper Bet feature could be a great option, as it gives you the added benefit of a multiplier up to 5 x. Adjusting the Hyper Bet level will increase the price per spin, boost the Walking Wild Multiplier and increase the number of free spins received during either bonus game.
The slot offers you the opportunity to buy into the Skull Bonus Game. And, quite frankly, the bonus game in question is so difficult to trigger organically that I imagine many a player will be driven to buy their way in. At this point you’ll also be able to choose the number of free spins as well as the value of the wild multipliers.
Walking Multiplier Wild
These multiplier wild symbols can appear at random during the base game. They’ll show up at the top of the grid and move down one position with every spin until they disappear off the bottom row. The multiplier attached to these will depend on the Hyper Bet level you’ve engaged.
Symbol Collection Bonus Spins
To the left of the grid is a glass container, which will slowly fill with green pickling liquid each time you land a collection symbol (the floating brain). At first I thought the number required for collection was a tall order, but because several of the required symbols can land at once, the process was speedier than expected. There are 4 levels, platinum offering the highest prizes. At each level you’re taken to a free spin game. You’re given the option to keep collecting symbols to play at the higher levels. During the bonus game, additional bonus spins can be won by landing the eye symbol.
- Bronze level needs 40 symbols
- Sliver level needs 60 symbols
- Gold level needs 80 symbols
- Platinum level needs 125 symbols
Skull Bonus Game
I don’t think I’ve ever waited so long to trigger a feature. It got to the point where I thought it was never going to happen. Had I not been intent on seeing the bonus first hand for the purpose of this review, I doubt I would have bothered. This was very strange since the fiery skull scatter appears on every reel, and the feature only requires 3 to land, I thought it would be triggered fairly easily. And when I finally, finally triggered the game the win was so low I actually emitted hysterical laughter. All that waiting, spinning and spending for such a pitiful reward.
3 skulls will give you 8 free spins, 4 skills will give you 12 free spins, 5 skulls awards 15 free spins and 6 will give you the maximum number of 20 free spins. You can, however, win additional free spins during the bonus by landing the eye symbol to get 1 extra free spin. Furthermore, sticky wild multiplier symbols can land which will lock in place and multiply wins by the shown amount.
Zombie Queen - Payouts and Wagering Limits
The slot’s bet range of 0.20 to 100 makes it possible for all types of players to engage, regardless of their budget. The same goes for the maximum win of 1,930 x your bet, which is high enough to tempt most players into diving in for a few spins. As you would expect the set of Royals plus 10 and 9 are the low value symbols. The higher value symbols are represented by the bracelet, the teeth, the ring, the necklace and the brooch. Overall, the individual values of the symbols are some of the lowest I’ve seen, which certainly accounts for the small base game wins. Payouts can be increased when you bring the Hyper Bet feature into play:
- You’ll get a 93.91% – 94.7% RTP at Bet Level 1 with a 1 x multiplier and a free spins bonus kicking off with 5 spins
- You’ll get a 94.22% – 95.05% RTP at Bet Level 2 with a 2 x multiplier and a free spins bonus kicking off with 7 spins
- You’ll get a 96.52% – 97.34% RTP at Bet Level 3 with a 3 x multiplier and a free spins bonus kicking off with 8 spins
- You’ll get a 96.52% – 97.35% RTP at Bet Level 4 with a 5 x multiplier and a free spins bonus kicking off with 9 spins
- You’ll get a 96.93% RTP with the HyperBonus at Bet Level 1
- You’ll get a 97.64% RTP with the HyperBonus at Bet Level 2
- You’ll get a 97.70% RTP with the HyperBonus at Bet Level 3
Zombie Queen - Final Verdict
In terms of pure entertainment alone, Zombie Queen makes for fantastic gameplay. But if you’re hoping to get rich then expect to experience a combination of frustration and disappointment. This slot dangles the potential for big prizes but repeatedly snatches them away at the last minute. Both bonus games are difficult to trigger, although the symbol collection game is a lot easier and also more rewarding than the other. However neither provide enough value to justify the money spent trying to gain access.
Perhaps big spenders will have enough clout to stand up to the pressure at the highest bet level where there’s the biggest chance of getting value. But for me personally, I think I’ll be laying this slot to rest.
