How to Play Online Roulette

Can Canadians play roulette online? Yes, online roulette is perfectly legal for players in Canada. It’s one of the most popular games at Canadian casinos – classic gambling sites and new online casinos alike!

Other than the possibility of playing it whenever and wherever and without the need for a real dealer, online roulette is played exactly like roulette in a land-based casino.

  1. Firstly, you have to decide what number(s) you want to bet on.
  2. Place your chips on the appropriate section of the table.
  3. Once the wheel starts spinning and the ball is entered into the wheel, you cannot change your decision anymore (“rien ne va plus”) and have to wait for the outcome – where the ball will land.
  4. After the ball has reached its final pocket and the wheel stops spinning, all bets are paid out. You’ll receive your chips or lose the ones you bet.

It is as simple as that.

Is online roulette rigged?

No, online roulette is not rigged. Like most other gambling games you find online, online roulette uses a random number generator to come up with results. As long as you’re playing at a trusted and reputable casino, you can rest assured that online roulette is not rigged, and positive and negative outcomes are all down to luck.

Is online roulette random?

Yes, online roulette is completely random. While some people may use betting strategies during online roulette, it’s a game of pure chance. Nothing a player does can influence the final outcome. Keeping all this in mind, it’s very important that you understand how the roulette wheel works, and what the different numbers and sections mean.

What is the roulette wheel number sequence?

Since we now have many different versions of online roulette, the wheel has a bunch of different layouts. The layout is designed to exclude any bias and to make it impossible to notice any logic behind the numbers on the wheel. Still, to play online roulette, it’s good to have a rough understanding of those layouts and how they came about, so let’s have a look.

Single-zero wheel

The single-zero wheel is probably the most balanced of them all. It features 37 pockets with the numbers 1 to 36 and the single zero. Apart from the green zero, you’ll see red and black numbers alternating all around the wheel.

You’ll also see high and low numbers alternating, with 5 and 10 next to each other being the notable exception. The last thing that is spread out all over the wheel is the odd and even numbers. You’ll never see more than two odd or even numbers next to each other.

Double-zero wheel

While the double-zero wheel also alternates between red and black numbers, it does a much worse job at spreading out the other things.

For example, you’ll notice many instances of high or low numbers being next to each other.

Triple-zero wheel

The rarely-used triple-zero wheel, on the other hand, uses almost the same layout as the well-balanced European version. But it throws a double, and a triple zero into the mix.

What do the different roulette sections mean?

Roulette wheels are broken down into three different sections as you can see in the graphic below. Thanks to the French origins of the game, those sections also have French names. So, let’s have a look at each one.

Voisins du Zero

Voisins du Zero is the biggest section and it includes the zero. It describes the section with the neighbours of zero” which is the actual translation of the section name.

If you want to play section bets, you would have a 9-chip bet on your hands in this section, with none of them being a straight up bet. Most of the bets are split bets of two numbers and then you only need 9 of them to cover all the numbers in this section.

Tiers du Cylindre

In order to cover all numbers in the second largest section, the Tiers du Cylindre, you’ll need to invest six chips. Again, all of them are split bets and they cover 12 numbers on the wheel.

Orphelins

The last section is split into two and was given the name Orphelins. It only covers 8 numbers and you’ll need 5 chips to cover them all.

Just remember that all of those section bets are exclusive to the European version of the online roulette wheel.

What kind of payout can I expect from roulette?

Let’s have a closer look at the actual bets and payouts of online roulette now, so you can take the information in and use it when you play your next round.
There are a bunch of bets that will give you an even money payout, meaning, if you win, your win will be the same as what you bet.

Those even money bets are the colors red or black, the low numbers from 1 to 18 or the high numbers from 19 to 36 and the even or odd numbers. Those bets have the best winning chances, but they also pay out the worst.

The next group is bets that pay out double of what you bet. To place those kinds of bets, you can either place your bet on one of the three dozen: 1 to 12, 13 to 24 or 25 to 36 − or, you can also bet it on a column of twelve numbers.

If you bet on six numbers only, that is called a line bet and will pay out 5 to 1. A corner bet, where you place your chip at the intersection of four numbers, will grant you a payout of 8 to 1, while a street bet on three numbers will give you 11 to 1. The aforementioned split bets of two numbers pay out 17 to 1.

Last but not least, you have your straight up bet, where you place your chip on one number only. This moxie will have you cash out a sweet 35x your stake if it pays off.

TYPE OF BET DESCRIPTION PAYOUT
STRAIGHT These are bets placed on individual numbers on the inside of the table. 35/1
SPLIT A bet placed on the line between 2 numbers that appear alongside each other. Place the chip on the line to cover bonus numbers. 17/1
CORNERS Place a bet where the lines cross between 4 numbers. 8/1
COLUMN BETS A bet placed on the left-hand side of a column to cover the 3 numbers in that column. 11/1
ROW BETS A bet placed on one of the 3 rows at the bottom of the table. This bet will cover all the numbers in that row. 2/1
DOUBLE COLUMN A bet placed on the left-hand side of the inside table between 2 rows. This covers 6 numbers at a time. 6/1
COLUMN PLUS ZERO A bet placed in the top left-hand corner between 1 and zero. This covers zero, 1, 2, and 3. 6/1
12’S A bet placed on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd 12’s to cover 12 numbers at the same time. 2/1
18’S A bet placed on first and last 18’s to cover 1 to 18 or 19 to 36. 1/1
ODD/EVEN A bet placed on the Odd or Even block will provide payouts for all even numbers or all odd numbers. Zero will result in a loss with this option. 1/1
RED/BLACK A bet placed on red or black to cover half the table. Zero will only again not payout with this bet. 1/1

What are the rules of online roulette?

Once you understand the different bets and payouts, there is not that much to the game of online roulette. It is a simple and straightforward game of chance.

You place your bets before the ball gets put into the spinning wheel and once it stops, the bets are paid out.

However, there are some differences when it comes to rules between the three main variations of roulette, which are the following.

Original Roulette Rules

While the old original roulette had zero and even a double zero, those were integrated into the color scheme and the odds/evens and high/low as well.

The single zero was red and was even as well as low, while the double zero was black, odd and high. If zero was the winning number and you have bet on one of the even money bets and would’ve won though, the bets would stay on for the next spin and would only be paid out if you won one of those bets on a “normal” number.

European Roulette Rules

European roulette seems to be the most popular choice amongst players. It gives players a greater chance to earn money, as the house advantage here is merely 2.63%.

Some casinos even offer some additional rules, cutting the house edge even further. In online roulette, you can choose to apply one or both of those rules before you start playing.

The “En Prison” rule

This rule stated that you have two options when a zero turns up, but only if you placed an even money bet. You can either reclaim half of your bet and lose the other half, or, you can leave the bet for the next spin in a classic case of all or nothing.

The “La Partage” rule

This works in a similar fashion. But you don’t have the option of leaving the bet. When a zero turns up, you lose half your bet.

American Roulette Rules

While the rules in this online roulette version work similar to the European one, the additional double zero leads to a much higher house edge.

What are the top roulette strategies?

Online roulette, like all other casino games, is a game of chance and there is no way for you to determine or influence the outcome. However, a number of popular online roulette strategies have been developed over the years, which we will explain in the section below.

Standard Martingale Strategy

Based on a French betting system from the 18th century and sometimes also used in trading, the standard Martingale Strategy in roulette tells you to double your bet on losses and change your bet after a win.

So, if you start betting on black and red comes up, you double your bet on black for the next spin and so on, until black comes up. Then you would start at the beginning with a bet on red and do it all over again.

Paroli Strategy

The Paroli is essentially the fire to the Martingale’s ice, which is why it is sometimes called the Reverse Martingale. The principle is kind of the same, but it’s flipped on the head. While you would double up on losses with Martingale, you would do so on wins with the Paroli strategy.

According to popular opinion, this strategy goes easier on your budget, since you only make small bets until you actually win.

What is lightning roulette?

Evolution Gaming has taken live roulette to a whole new level with Lightning Roulette.

It’s played out in a gameshow type scenario with hosts taking you through every step of the game. You’ll feel like you’re on TV every single time you load up Lightning Roulette. It doesn’t just look great though, it ensures that you are in for a roulette experience like you’ve never had before. Offering levels of excitement akin to video slots, it won’t disappoint when you start to play.

If you have always wanted to enter a gameshow but have never been accepted; then Lightning Roulette makes it easy for you.

How to place a bet on Lightning Roulette

Lightning Roulette offers 10 different ways to place a bet when you start playing. They are split into 2 sections:

  1. Inside bets
  2. Outside bets

The inside bets are as follows: straight up, split, street, corner and line.

To a newcomer to roulette the straight up is just 1 number on its own, the split is 2 numbers that are adjacent to each other, the street is 3 numbers that are adjacent to each other, the corner is 4 numbers that are adjacent to each other and the line is 6 numbers that are adjacent to each other.

The outside bets are as follows: column, dozen, red/black, even/odd and 1-18/19-36.

These are a little easier for a newcomer to work out. The column is all of the numbers on a vertical line on the roulette board, the dozen is 12 numbers choosing from either 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36, the red/black is choosing either the red or the black numbers, the even/odd is choosing either the even or the odd numbers and 1-18/19-36 is choosing either one of those 2 groups of numbers.

Once you have placed your bet the wheel will spin, with a single ball bearing landing in one of the spaces for the numbers, as a visual representation of the random number generator.

Once the ball has laid to rest, there is one more thing before any potential payouts occur.

What are the Lightning Roulette lucky numbers?

At random intervals some of the numbers will be chosen to be the Lucky Numbers.

If you have played a straight up bet and managed to choose the winning number then the Lucky Numbers can increase your winnings. If your winning number is chosen to be a Lucky Number then it will have a random multiplier to increase your win.

Anything from 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 or 500 can be applied to the winning number when the Lucky Numbers triggers.

How is Lightning Roulette different to regular roulette?

In terms of gameplay Lightning Roulette offers something a little different to most roulette games on the market. The Lucky Numbers feature makes sure that each round has some tension as you wait to see if the Lucky Numbers are triggered and if they are what multiplier will be applied to them. It is almost like the tension that video slot games provide. Overall Lightning Roulette is an enjoyable experience that keeps the player engaged throughout.
